That's a beast of a heatsink on it. The audio output stage must be rather powerful! AM section sounds clean and clear. I wish modern radios had that good of a sound on the AM band. A 1970 Chevy van would be a pretty cool vehicle to have. Those are the cab-over ones aren't they?

that AM / FM Flippdial looks interesting, i think i haven't seen that in a carradio before. the reception sounds all good, many radio transmitters are received well. AM sounds like there is some interference, maybe a suppressor choke on the powercable of the radio and a few snap on ferrites on the cable from the antenna would help. amazing that after decades there is no crackling noise when turning the knobs, that is a quality made radio. classic radio in a classic truck, that would fit lookswise. the screws on the front look rusted, liquid silicon can be applied on the screws to prevent further rusting. i like the 57 chevy truck.

My first car, a 72 Chevelle 4 door with a 250 L6 motor, had an AM/FM mono radio with the flip dial selector, except it was black. It had two speakers, on in the dash and one in the rear deck with a fader control.

The flash back! I was the Rep for Pioneer Auto when it came out. Sold hundreds of that model! Loved the lockable hump mounts! Service Merchandise was one of my customers. They sold tons of them. Loudness is loudness contour just like home audio. Volume level dependent boost of lows and highs for lower volumes.
@deepblueskyshine4 ай бұрын
"Mute" on tuning is a feature each and every FM tuner more complicatet than taiwanese or honkoidal american style pocket radio have, and it's more often called silent tuning, and in older radios it is manually switched with AFC (Automatic Frequency Control - self fine tuning within a narrow frequency range), on newer (over 40 years old newer) switching between air noise silencing and AFC is more often automatic and not advertised. Because more than half of the people are stressed when the radio goes mute while tuning it manually not knowing radio's gone faulty or it's tuned on a station trasmitting silence in the current moment of time, most applications just lower air noise level significantly without fully muting it. "Loudness" is one of several marketing words (super bass, mega bass, etc.) for physiological equal-loudness over hearing spectrum control as defined in ISO 226 standard, and in analogue cirquits consists of one, more often two RC loops connected to taps of the the main volume pot, effectively attenuating mid frequencies far more than high and low spectra to which our ears are less sensitive (a tone correction according to volume level, and the marketing word "loudness" is more correct compared to "some bass", because trebles are also left higher volume), but because volume knob regulates amplification and not the actual sound pressure reaching our ears over the air there's always a switch to turn this correction off when a missmatch occures.

The loudness is an equalizer circuit which gives it a boost in Bass and treble when the volume is set low, I had one of these in a Ford Maverick with 6×9 Jensen Speakers. It was great, sounded better than a lot of newer systems.

Had one in my '67 Firebird years ago. Mounted it in the glove compartment. It was ok. Had a horrible turn on/off pop/thump. Drove a couple of surface mount rear deck speakers. NO subwoofer! LOL. Audio power was kinda low, so I bought a Craig Power Play booster amp. Helped, but that on off pop was just insane loud now. Much later, I modified the rig to accept an AUX input. Used the MUTE switch to change between radio and AUX. I could then plug my portable CD player into it! Yes, I had the car into the 80's. All history now.

Hey Jason - where the F is the reverse switch on this stupid thing? I just bought a 1981 E150 with a 4 speed and I believe I have this exact transmission and am trying to get my reverse lights working. I found a plug in the frame which is potentially the connector but no idea where the switch goes. Can you provide any insight? I can provide pictures if that's helpful. Thank you kindly for reading my comment!

My 1967 Pontiac Parisienne has a very similar radio with the flipping dial scale, but the outer ring behind the tuning knob is the AM / FM selector. The F/ R fader is under the dash top next to the convertible top UP / DOWN control, and styled the same.

Those were very strong sensiitive radios. We had a get away place out in the country as a kid. I used to "camp" out in the back yard and had a AM radio from a 1962 Chevy. It had 4 tubes and that nasty single ended output transistor. I strung a wire around the inside of my tent. Man, did I pick up the stations! Dial just jammed up with 'em. Day or night. Fun times. I'd still like to find a radio of that era today, but like you said, most are gone.

Holden had a later version of that box fitted behind the 350 C.I. Chevy V8 engine back in 1971-1974 in the HQ Holden Monaro GTS 350 transmission. My dad was unfortunate enough to have his 1972 model Holden LC Torana stolen by a "workmate" who was giving him a ride to work, they were after the M21 4 speed manual transmission which was very rare in those days since they usually ran a 3 speed manual transmission or a 3 speed automatic transmission (the Tri-matic or 3L30 transmission). Apparently they wanted to use it for drag racing. He found the car dumped & full of water minus the transmission,the insurance company replaced the transmission albeit with a cheaper Opel 4 speed manual transmission because they couldn't find an M21 transmission for it,, the car was basically a Vauxhall Viva fitted with the Holden powertrain including the 173 cubic inch Holden six. The person who stole the car went to jail for it because they caught him. My late grandfathers old 1983 model Holden VH Commodore is also fitted with the M21 4 speed manual transmission,he was a Booth since he was on my dads side,the M21 is GM Holdens own Australia made transmission unlike the Muncie which was made at Muncie in the U.S. obviously. The T56 Tremec manual transmission in my 2002 slips out of third gear sometimes which I put down to a worn shift fork or 3-4 synchronizer assembly, it's not the transmission mount because I replaced it. I would replace the cluster gear in the Muncie unit it it's still available !

Who cares? The only progress has been in cellphones and the internet no diseases cured, architecture today is awful, few pretty girls, cars are look alike uninspiring,appliances now, refrigerators average about 8 years but in the 60's refrigerators like would have to rust out before they stopped working. Yea and everything is made cheap in China you(oh what progress). Smartphones have ruined kids lives and they don't even know it.

It will work with the regular antenna and splitter, but you are wise not to key the mic. I have a few pages of the manual that show how to adjust the standing wave ratio (SWR) and can send them to you. I'm currently listening to one that I just had restored and picked up a few days ago. I'm going to run it for awhile in my shop to see how it performs before putting it in my jeep. I'll run a regular cb antenna though.

I've had a couple of MSD boxes over the years, and they were fantastic. My '77 Chev pickup w/a 454 required me to put a plastic insert between the coil and plug wires on top of the distributor, it would sometimes jump the gap!! Worth every penny in my opinion.
