Respect to the farmers who plow and sow those fields every year despite the shells. I’ve already unearthed two myself, and I was like, ‘Oh, sh..!’”

I lived in Verdun in the 60s when my US Army family was stationed there. We knew not to touch unexploded ordnance but picked up bayonets, helmets, bullets and other stuff.

The ending felt like bad fanfic to me. The book is good, why not retell that story?

It was The 2rd Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry destroy the a Brigade of the Imperial Guards on 11th November 1914, This is still Battle Honour of Nun's Woods. The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry was later 1st Battalion Royal Green Jackets.

I visited this a couple of years ago, because one of my great-grandfathers fought here and was injured by gas. The entire battlefield area is horrifying. I stood right where you were in the beginning of the video, in the pouring summer rain, crying and sang "No Man's Land". Why don't we ever learn?

Fantastic video. Several years ago I went and visited the grave of Moina Michael, “The Poppy Lady”. She did amazing work assisting disabled veterans after the war and am proud she was a professor at my alma mater, the University of Georgia. Thank you for including her story in the video.

68 of those 780 were available the following morning... Less than 1% of the men from the day before... I cant wrap my head around the sheer scale of this horrific loss. I was brought to this video by a comment from a Newfie on another great war video. They explained how their island was left bereft of its' men, and how only children and the elderly remaining... Good God above, it's just appalling. Absolutely horrifying.

Thank you for sharing this. Your videos are so poignant and you tell the stories so well. I was totally in awe when you showed the gravestone of my great great uncle W.C Meyer, (South Australia) it has the Star of David inscription and small rocks placed on it. We were totally blown away!

My question is: Did the war planners ever see the terrain in which they were actually fighting or was it just planned on maps? Seems crazy, you really have to emphasize with deserters.

Thanks a million for the kind words you have about us Germans. Sometimes I feel, many english or american KZbinr forget, that on the German side were young mens too. Young mens with Hopes, Dreams, Love, who were thrown into this horrible war without any chance. It wasn't the people on the streets, who wants this war. It were the politics, who wants that.

Im going to the imperial war museum soon to see Williams belongings in person. His family never left his home village of Whitwell. I am the only family member left who even cares about John William Streets story. Thank you for filming his gravestone in great quality and reading his poetry too. Very touching.

The original Australian memorial at Villers Brettenaux showed an Aussie bayoneting the German dragon was removed and now shows an Aussie holding a rifle above his head. Hitler ordered that the Canadian memorial at Vimy be blown up it but never was. The East Riding of Yorks memorial at Hill 60 was used as target practice German soldiers in WW2. By and large the memorials were left in peace.
@McMurryIndian93Ай бұрын
I know many Germans who fought in WW2 had respect for the cemeteries of the Great War, but I'd be shocked if none were vandalized, especially graves of Jewish soldiers. Are there any stories of Germans desecrating any Great War memorials or graves?
@chrisbrooks2963Ай бұрын
Norm Christie said of the Cross of Sacrifice present in all CWGC sites that contain 40 or more graves. That each man sacrificed not only their lives but their names and life stories as well. You bring some of that back to life for us and for them and i thank you. I also noticed a book you a using as reference in the video I'm hoping you can link me that as I plan to make my own journey to visit the crematories of the western front in the spring of 2025.

Whenever I think of Pozeires and the battle. I think of George Butterworth and his sacrifice there which recently was posted at Pozeires as well as on the Theival Memorial after the war.

We owe these men so much.. I always contribute when I see the old marines collecting and I say thank you for your service but my words stick .. I think how those men sacrificed their youth and their lives and by doing so maybe saved my son's , who are 22 and 27, from possibly laying in a grave at their age. We can never tell what these fallen men prevented for the world. I pray that one day we can avoid these wars as a society. Unfortunately I don't think me or mine will be around long enough for that.

Heart of Midlothian Fan here, McCrae’s story was lost until not long ago. (2004). The cairn was planned years ago but getting the funding together. There is also a clock in the centre of Edinburgh and a Bronze Solidier and Plaque at Tynecastle. There is also a play put together around Tynecastle which is worth seeing. And a song “Hearts of Glory” by Craig Herbertson After all that Hearts finished the 1914/15 season in 2nd place.

Hello. I know I'm late but I would just like to say that, as many frenchys do, I have several great grand-fathers who fought in Verdun. Can I just say, your instructive and respectful videos give a really good appreciation of how WE see those battlefields. Lots of useless death against our europeans neigbourghs and brothers. Your videos are remanbrance without bitterness wich is how we teach the World Wars in France, so it is appreciated. Keep doing your thing, I like your content

Well, he's my cousin as well. Cousins can be separated by thousands of years and still be cousins. Any two people who have common ancestors are either siblings, niece/nephew and aunt/uncle, or cousins.
