It’s a play on words. See, the if we go back to 14th century France, there was a common connection made between advancing science and devil worship. This was intensified in 1386, when French occultist Jacques Toussant Benoit invented graph paper, which was initially used make drawing pentagrams easier. However, the process for making this paper became a key piece in the invention of the printing press. At the time, the church believed that more bibles should be printed at faster and faster rates in order to spread Christianity, however, due to Jacques influence over the printing press technology, he made the production of graph paper his priority. This was a statement against the teachings of the church as well as a way to spread his satanic beliefs. The church couldn’t kill him but needed a way to simply get him out of the picture in order to have access to mass production printing. In the end, they made it their mission to tarnish his name as well as the name of graph paper by making several long lasting statements about the evilness of graph paper. The sentiment lasted, and through the coming centuries, graph paper was ostracized in several famous French poems such as “the snail it’s hat”, “happiness’ psithurism, an ode to life”, and “rap god”, by Eminem. Nowadays, it’s simply common knowledge that graph paper goes against the church, and is therefore evil.
