Great video, thank you! I am used to watching DV from mp4 rips via the built-in media player of my LG C3 (I use a hard drive connected via USB). Let's imagine I make correct rips (baked FEL if needed, etc.) and audio over optical is enough for me. Is there any benefit for me in Ugoos? Apart from the convenience. Will it present a more accurate DV picture in comparison to the built-in media player? If there are any issues with the built-in player, I would be :D Excuse me if I am repeating an old question, but I haven't asked about it from this perspective, I believe.
@RESET_-bg7kwКүн бұрын
I dont know about the C3 but it is most likely like my C2. There seem to be some colorspace conversion and YCBCR clipping issues on the internal LG TV apps. Try this pattern: drive.google.com/file/d/1ydBOoc1zfFGUV6uYJEdT1r5Eg2v74N40/view?usp=drive_link I'm not sure exactly how this affect DV quality and this following comparison doesn't include my C2 but as a reference see: slow.pics/c/NBQVuXQw I remember my old C8 didn't have those issue. Also, in my experience, watching MKV rip without having to worry about baking fel or not is a LOT more practical. MP4 and TS container can be buggy.

6:50 So you are saying that I should let my LG OLED do the HDR tonemapping instead of my 4K Player (Panasonic UB820)? The HDR-Optimizer (in other words tonemapping feature) of the Panasonic player is usually praised by reviewers… 😅
@RESET_-bg7kwКүн бұрын
No, I'm saying that all the bluray players I tested: Sony and Oppo, are altering the DV dynamic metadata and limit the values to the mastering display causing clipping if the content goes above it and there's nothing you can do about it. This is how DV was implemented in these OLD SOC. I never tested the Panasonic player though but I would be very surprised if it was any different than Sony or Oppo. Keep in mind that this is not an issue if the content is properly graded within the Mastering display capabilities. HDR-Optimizer: I would never use any form of automatic dynamic tone mapping from players or TVs. These function can improve the image but it can also degrade it.
@Manco654Күн бұрын
@ Thanks for the detailed answer, I think I go sth mixed up. The HDR Optimizer isn’t even available when outputting Dolby Vision, it’s for HDR10 only and meant to tonemap content that exceeds the capabilities of the TV (for example a 1000 nit TV and a higher nit hdr mastered disc). This tonemapping can alternatively be performed by the TV. I’d be very surprised if the Panasonic player was messing with the DV metadata in any harmful way, I think/hope it would have been noticed in reviews. 🙂
@RESET_-bg7kwКүн бұрын
''I’d be very surprised if the Panasonic player was messing with the DV metadata in any harmful way, I think/hope it would have been noticed in reviews.'' 99.99% sure it alters the metadata like the oppo/sony. This is just how the old DV cmv2.9 SOC was designed. Only the new cmv4.0 SOC respect 100% the metadata. The other reviewers dont understand DV as i do.

Have you tested the HDR static metadata clipping issue on other displays and blu-ray players ? Some TVs apply different tonemapping and rollback depending on the mastering display luminance metadata while other TVs ignore this information (it's why some 4K discs like GoodFellas were deemed problematic on some TVs, being graded dim nit in a 4000 nits container, while workkng fine on other displays). A brand that handles this well has always been Panasonic, so I would be interested in knowing if you've tested the clipping issue on multiple TV brands and on Panasonic blu-ray players. It could be that the streaming boxes ignore the metadata and due to the TV's internal behavior, the clipping occurs on blu-ray players which don't ignore the metadata, but maybe on a different TV brand you would get the same results between streaming boxes and blu-ray players.
@RESET_-bg7kw3 күн бұрын
The clipping issues im talking about in this video is about Dolby Vision, not static HDR10. In HDR10, the ugoos send all the original static metadata encoded in the video so if there is clipping issue in HDR10, then it's your TV. On LG, 4000 MDL: it use maxcll if under 4000. If MDL is 10 000nits, maxcll is ignored and the strongest curve is used. There is no difference between the tone mapping curves under the roll off point so darker content always looks correct even with stupid metadata. i.ibb.co/B5M9hDDB/hdr-roll-off.png

On top do that, it was graded on a 4,000 nit reference monitor, so it will be very bright. But with the right settings and player like a Panasonic 4K player with the HDR Optimizer, you can tone map these really well.

@@RESET_-bg7kwSorry I missed the pinned comment.Apart from being the most powerful and obviously the most expensive device I genuinely wanted to understand that from a functionality, image quality and formats support perspective do the S905x4 devices lack anything compared to Ugoos. When you consider that the SEI804 devices cost less and can dual boot ATV14 and CE, it offers a very decent streaming experience as well with Auto frame rate, HD audio passthrough, Netflix licence and so on. And AV1 codec becomes useful for KZbin and such. So that makes the SEI boxes more versatile. HP1 and HP2 seem kinda strange. There is new detail (both are native 4K scans), but not much in shadows and highlights (skies at 3:30 look awful, in my opinion; old CGI?), which is VERY surprising. Besides, the colour grading steers away from the original towards modern approaches (blues become teal/cyan, etc.). Correct me if I am wrong.

In that same time stamp you do get better colors though. A lot of older blu-rays had overly warm colors. The sky is super red on the Blu-ray. The 4k is way more natural. The clouds are actually white. Plus, I think one of the best things about Harry Potter on 4k is the extreme brightness of the magic. I think it's cool when you get otherworldly stuff like that with unnatural brightness, because it isn't natural. Like the diary at 5:50. It's more pronounced in the later movies when the color grading is really dark and desaturated, but the magic is super bright and extremely colorful still!

Hey RESET, have you got a chance to try out the new Dune Pro Vision media player that replaces the Real Vision? It can do true TV LED and CMv4.0, it runs on Amlogic S905X4-J cipset and you can install CoreELEC NG with support for Profile 7 FEL. I like very much Dune players and i now bought the Pro Vision too, i installed CoreELEC NG then updated to CPM's build and added his skin too, the info is such good on his skin as it shows many things compared to the regular skin. Have you got the chance to try this player out in Dune's OS and UI, if yes what's your thoughts about it? Does true TV LED bring a better image compared to the fake TV LED of Real Vision? I now have them both hooked up to my OLED and i have switched between them running the same DV content and didn't noticed a difference, maybe if i had two TVs side by side, same model TVs. Do you have a video on true TV LED vs fake TV LED? Also i have seen that CoreELEC NG doesn't read properly the Profile 7 FEL test videos from your cloud, the ones with a red screen that shows the text only when FEL is supported. I can see the text that says that this device can decode FEL but then the videos seems to freeze although the info screen shows that the it runs but for example i dont get to the part where the video gets to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. My LG B9 OLED can decode Profile 7 FEL with its internal player if its an mp4 container, maybe you know that till series 9 the internal player could do this, those test videos run fine on my B9, that's how i observed that CoreELEC has a bug or something.

What a difference the HDR grade makes!
@Chrisratata6 күн бұрын
This being 100-nit HDR yet the side-by-sides nonetheless looking different (sometimes darker sometimes brighter), things like this make me further "suspicious" of HDR sometimes... Technically, HDR offers the Colorists the opportunity to represent the film print most authentically, but I'm often curious whether sometimes they just use HDR as an opportunity to tweaking the toning in an attempt to make things pop more in a way that even 10-bit SDR doesn't offer. I understand what all of this stuff is supposed to be doing in theory, but the way certain images don't always reconcile with that understanding makes me question just how consistently the tools are being used across various films. Also, what purpose does DV serve in a situation like this?, seeing how it's not only flat but also the fact that pretty much every TV on the market can display 100 nits without mapping
@RESET_-bg7kw6 күн бұрын
Yeah, they only played with the contrast and average brightness as you can see in the pixels measurement graphs . The average/average brightness is 15nits in SDR and 20nits in HDR and the peaks(maxcll) have pretty much the same brightness and some shots even have fewer highlights details in HDR. As for the DV metadata, they are indeed pointless.
@Prince_Seven5 күн бұрын
@@RESET_-bg7kw I wouldn't call them pointless here. Many TV brands, especially in the low to mid range, don't have the most accurate HDR10 presentation put there, usually being brighter than EOTF. However on a lot of these TVs, enabling DV will provide more accurate results (while in DV Dark that is) or for general consummers offer options such as DV IQ to adjust the brightness depending on the environnement and avoid the "I can't watch this in my living room, HDR sucks" issue. It can also be argued DV would help with color tonemapping. But yes I think on higher end models, DV here is quite trivial.
