Nice video! Just happened to notice the scissors you used to trim the thread, they look very sharp and come to a fine point, just wondering what the scissors are since I’m looking for a nice pair. I also like your whip finisher, is it an original materelli or just a replica/copy, if so where did you get it from? If you don’t mind :) Thanks, Alex

Seems perfect to me…maybe try more and be patient with yourself. Hard for me too with my first SEVERAL flies. If you think that will not work be comfortable in the fact you are an idiot at it and try something else, like buying the flies and Tenkara fishing….

Ouch. Whip finish should instead be tied forward from the back of the hook towards the eye. To see why, scale up with small diameter rope/string on a broom handle ... s/b readily apparent why. This tutorial, well intentioned, promoting a bad habit?

I've probably executed a whip finish in excess of 20,000 times, probably twice that. Tying thread is so fine that for practical purposes it's irrelevant. Plus, when you have have finished a fly and covered the base of a wing or collar hackle the thread is invariably close to the eye.

Thank you for showing this, i got that exact tieoff tool as a present recently and didn't know how to properly use it (I'm used to an older version that im borrowing, it's very bendy and has a spring like part to it)

You can also use a looped piece of thread, bind over that, and pull the end through. I'm not a fan of extras in my tying. Scissors, a good Regal vise, and decent ingredients. Whip Finishers? Not really a thing most people would need if they took a five minute lesson. IMHO

Funnily enough Craig I don't use a tool myself as I tend to mislay them. In my experience many novice tyers prefer to learn the technique with a tool and once you realise the process of forming a running loop it it's easy to switch. Actually I'm quite an old timer myself having been tying flies for more than fifty years.

The best way and quickest is to use your right and and two fingers! Watch someone who knows, and you don't need ANY hardware like this. The single hand method is, was, and will be used by pro fly tiers. It is simple, accurate, and incredibly simple. Check out and old timer, or someone who knows how to do it. As far as this whip finisher, it's ok, but not needed. Who taught me? Al Brewster, Art Flick, Joe Bates. Is that good enough for you experts out there?

So you’ve got a hook with some thread tied on it… is this a start to something? Does it go somewhere like when we get to the part when I put feathers on the thing?
@xBarbaricDuck
@xBarbaricDuck Жыл бұрын
Walter - this is just a way to illustrate the whip finish - a way of securing the tying thread. It is actually done when the fly has been completed.

To finish my first fly yesterday morning, I had to watch this here video to learn how to do the Whip Finish. The instructional video by tightlinevideo (kzbin.info/door/IdIkp_uBiYEw-Pb4-BDBjw), which I watched to learn to tie a Wooly Bugger, skipped showing that part. Fantastic video. You made it possible for me to wrap up my first one ! Thanks !!
