I managed to pick up 2 NiB PocketCHIPs a few years ago. I left one shrink wrapped and use the other one occasionally to code with Pico-8 just for fun. Zep (the Pico-8 dev) has thus far kept the PocketCHIP version of Pico-8 current with the latest release. You're right that flashing can be a little involved, though I'm glad some folks archived the NextThingCo files on Github and the internet archive to make it still possible.

I ordered several of those modules, mainly for their USB capabilities, but never received anything, and they stopped responding when asked for a refund. It's nice to see some people got them and put them to some use, but from my perspective it was a scam.

@phosphite I followed the project initially in 2016 (if I remember right) and didn't think much of it. I never actually got it from the kickstarter. All mine right now are second-hand "broken" units. Most just need to be reflashed, but since it's a lost art I need to find a way to get it working 100% correctly.

I never ordered the Pocket CHIP, just a single of the main board. Never did much with it, unfortunately. Or maybe fortunately, given the lack of firmware for it nowadays.

@@LostieTrekieTechie I'm attempting to make an openly available fast way to reflash these guys. It might be longer than I thought. I'll update later. (Quick Update: I know many people on Reddit post guides on how to reflash and rebuild these. Also, they havetalk about basic replacement parts for the Pocket CHIP.)

Yeah, many other people have discussed it, but I intend on making a short, "to the point" ish video on this eventually. Everyone that has made a video is far more indepth than I could dream of. Thankful some people got their hands on some too. (Since all mine are second hand)

They technically weren't vaporware, but the raspberry pi zero coming out as a $5 computer really undermined their $9 computer pitch. It had storage and wifi built in but not HDMI out at that range, but possibly composite if you cut the TRRS connector.

@@LostieTrekieTechie It also had native paralel LCD connector, no need to use GPIOs for driving an LCD. That was really good for the time, not many had this.

I think other folks in the comments don’t understand - this isn’t like just modding a gba - the Swancrystal had the best and most reflective non-backlit screen of any handheld until the Playdate. Modding it is actually kind of sad.

I use the built-in Samsung screen record feature that was added in some update. I make sure to turn on do not disturb and turn some notifications off just so I don't have to edit alot.
