I just bought 2 for my gerbils. It's better than a lot of stuff out there. Most gerbil owners struggle because we need 10" of burrowing space, but also want a cage top for breathability (to avoid upper respiratory issues). I have used a 40 gallon aquarium with a cage on top--but I can never get it the way I want it--and glass tanks are too heavy to lift (and in the midwest where I live, we need to be able to bring my gerbils into the basement during a tornado warning). The wheel size for the Omlet will work for gerbils. Gerbil owners will often go for a 11" Niteangel Silent Spinner; anything bigger is too heavy for them to turn. I do appreciate your video. Very helpful!

Do you have lids on your cages for the dwarfs? I’m possibly getting a robo hamster tomorrow and I have a bin cage set up. It’s tall but it doesn’t have a lid. I was wondering if you’ve ever had a hamster try to escape. My dwarf hammy hasn’t ever tried to escape his bin when the lid has been off but I did eventually make a lid for that one. Lmk asap because I might be getting him tomorrow and I’m a little bit apprehensive about it! Thank you! ❤
@RachelGotHamstersАй бұрын
@@HaileysSmallPetChannel hi! 👋 so yes, I also do not use lids! I have a few thoughts- 1- every hamster is different, so I usually error on the side of caution when I first get them. Usually my hamsters (particularly my robos, although I’ve had some exceptions) like the comfort and security of their enclosure, so I don’t find they even try to escape. But! Some hamsters are bold explorers! So good to have a lid on hand and/or take other precautions (close and seal the door to the room they’re in, have a hamster cam watching what happens). Once I get to know a hamster , their preferences and their climbing abilities I can relax a little :) but initially I do like to keep a lid on, or keep bedding and platforms lower until I can feel more secure. Could you use the lid from your other hamsters enclosure, since you say he doesn’t need it? Are you using a 200 qt bin? In general I find robos to be fairly clumsy and not good climbers… but! Sometimes you meet one that defies expectation! 2- I keep all platforms away from the edge of the bin, water bottles are in stands (not hanging from the edge of the bin) and wheels not close to the edge either. This ensures there’s nothing to climb on to get out. When I’ve seen hamsters escape it’s by climbing a water bottle or squeezing between the wheel and the wall of the enclosure, typically. 3- I don’t have other pets I need to protect my hamsters from, and they live in one room I can close the door to, so I feel safe about not using lids once I get to know the hamster. I hope this helps? 🤞
@HaileysSmallPetChannelАй бұрын
@@RachelGotHamstersthank you so much! It was very helpful! I am using a 150 qt bin I think 🤔 it’s a little shallower then your one but it looks pretty much the same size. I don’t use water bottles so I don’t need to worry about that and there aren’t any high platforms or anything. I don’t see how a robo could escape but I’ll try to come up with a lid (the bin I’m using is from my basement and it didn’t have a lid 😂) but I have some wire mesh and I’m sure I could find something to make the lid out of at least until I know him or her a little bit better. It’s going to be a temporary cage until I can move him/her into a bigger bin cage. I’m not even 100% sure that I’m getting my new hamster tomorrow but it’s a possibility. Thank you for the advice ❤❤❤

@@RachelGotHamstersupdate: I did get my robo hamster today! He is so cute and I named him TaterTot and I think it’s adorable! There isn’t a lid on my cage but I made sure there is no possible way he could escape and I’m going to try to make a lid very soon! He’s been in it all day and I haven’t had any issues yet! It's actually pretty spacious :-) I sent for one (paid for it) and the internal measurements (between the perspex for substrate level) are 86cm x 55.5cm (4773 square cms or 739 square inches :-)) The perspex goes right up to the edge of the base, so it actually has slightly more floor area than the Savic Plaza 100 🙂 (which is actually 98 x 48 internally between the bars). I was impressed. I like the front opening door and barred section. The wheel is actually bigger than they say and is 27cm and everything is really well made. I particularly love the cardboard multiroom houses! It's expensive but it does include a good silent wheel and a couple of multiroom houses. Bigger is always better but it's a really good size and holds 30 cm of bedding 🙂 And only slightly off 100 x 50 equivalent - as many 100cm cages are actually. It's significantly larger than a 40 gallon breeder tank which is about 648 square inches. Agree it would have been good if it was just an inch or two longer but I think it's good for all species of hamsters (except possibly female syrians). Great to have a barred cage with a deep base for bedding.

@samanthaheizer-metcalf9703Ай бұрын
They started off good and then fell short :( I personally wouldn’t recommend this for a Syrian hamster, but it would be okay-ish for a dwarf. Mostly they needed to go larger. To use this one you have to fill the entire non-wire section with compacted bedding. Most of the accessories is only suitable for dwarf hamsters. I personally would like Omlet to do the following changes: 1. Increase the minimum measurements to 60in L x 30in W (1,800 square inches of primary floor space) 2. Pan height 6in (preferably would like this to be added to the clear height section) 3. non-wire clear height 12in 4. Wire height 14in for a total height of 32in (18in total available for bedding height) 5. Significantly better accessories split by type of hamster This might seem like a huge increase, but it is what is needed to meet all types of hamsters needs. While also giving full flexibility to design the setup to perfection. This is also what I would have expected for the price point they are requesting honestly.

@RachelGotHamstersАй бұрын
@@samanthaheizer-metcalf9703 great points! I was thinking yesterday, I forgot to say that I definitely do not think this is an appropriate cage for a Syrian hamster. For a dwarf hamster I think it might be okay, outside of the concern about the wires. I do wish they had two sizes!
@samanthaheizer-metcalf9703Ай бұрын
@@RachelGotHamsters sadly, a lot of people don’t believe hamsters need a lot of space or appropriately sized accessories/enrichment. When the wrong sized accessories/enrichment is used in an enclosure it may make the enclosure appear larger than what it actually is. It would be really nice to see more hamster experts that follow the best practices for best care publicly review the enclosure with all of the appropriate sized accessories/enrichment that is needed in every single hamster enclosure based on species. Like hides, maze, 12in wheel (I believe niteangel wheel is 12.8in), 10in of bedding, large sand bath, enrichment, etc.

Brought home a young dwarf from a pet store. 8 days later she gave birth! Never knew she was even pregnant, ungh. So i had to quickly study up on this situation. Finding one dwarf to buy is often hard. Suddenly here i am with 7! Long story short, i saw to it that her brood went to good homes. But i decided to keep one son. And for one reason: he was striking little guy with thick dense mocha brown fur standing out from all his dishwater gray siblings. Little guy grew into a brawny, young buck...although rather nervous and bitey. Fast forward to now, dude falls asleep in my hand. How did we get to that point? I'd bite him! For real. I'd hold him, he'd chomp down on my finger, and instead of me recoiling, i sucked it up...let him stay clamped. I'd sternly warn him to cut it out...he'd stay on my finger but i'd feel the pressure lessen up. I'd further kind of grab his ear or neck sruff between my lips, and if he squeezed harder so did i. Became a kind of stand off. Lol. He'd slowly loosen the grip and then let go and simply stare at me, either like "how dare you!" Or "Hey, ur alright." But then he'd just totally chill, brux vibrate, and peep. What i've learned is the biting is their way of testing you...often communicating something like "i'm bonding with you here." So weird. It's the opposite of what you'd think if you didn't understand the language. Just my 2 cents. Hope this notion might help bitey dwarf owners out there.
