Apologies for the audio issue (from roughly 40:00 - 47:00). For what it's worth, the audio you hear is from coverage of the final game of the Ding-Nepomniachtchi championship a year or so earlier.

A small correction to the opening talk by the bearded fellow: Spassky became world chess champion in 1969, not in 1972. In 1972, famously, Robert J. Fischer was the winner. I thought it was generally considered that David Bronstein was the strongest player ever to not become w.c.c. // I seem to recall he had tied Botvinnik 12-12 in one of their matches for the title. Botvinnik got to retain the title, a privilege that years later was not given to Fischer (but then later yet, perversely, WAS given to G. Kasparov when he was champ, at least once retaining the title after being battled by Karpov to 12-12).
@irvingrabinАй бұрын
Correction. This privilege WAS given to Fisher. Original condition was 24 games with draws counted, and if the score is 12-12 Fischer would retain championship. These were the exact conditions that existed in 1972 when he won title. The contender had to win by at least one point, reaching 12.5 points. Fischer offered unlimited match without counting draws until 10 wins, and that he would retain championship if the score is 9-9. To win Karpov would have to be ahead by at least 2 points, like 10-8. Fischer refused to see that he asked for more privileges than was given to former champions.

You do not play to be up a bishop. You play to mate. At 24:20, if Qd1, Nf2+ Kg1, Nh3+ Kh1, Bxf3#

Title makes it sound like Korchnoi died this week but he died years ago. Why publish this now?

I'm uploading all of the old episodes of Chess Chat. The title shows the original recording date.

@@DaveC01473 Thanks for clarifying - you might want to clarify by way of a new (or additional) title so that you don't get annoying people like me leaving comments.

Hikaru might never become the world champion, but he probably changed the course of chess history and popularity almost by himself through his streaming/content delivery style. Considering his performances at the candidates tournaments, neither is he a slouch by any means when it comes to classical games. Truly a great player of our time.

How many of the current chess grandmasters were heavily influenced by their parents to play chess? It seems like it's pretty much all of them that were encouraged to play chess by their parents at a very young age. The young children saw the admiration from their parents when they did well and the parents then ferried them across the country from tournament to tournament. Pretty soon Chess becomes what the child is good at it which is their reasoning to play it the rest of there adult life. Like in reality Chess is a super boring game. It's hard for me to imagine a child born in the last 20/30 years that would prefer to play chess over video games.
