I always wanted to ask... would something like this be possible on real hardware? As in using both fm and psg
@LouisTheSEGANerdКүн бұрын
@@pepearmstrong3239 Yes! It won't work on a Mark III with the FM expansion pack but it works on a Japanese Master System just fine through an everdrive cart. There's a link to the ROM file in the description:)

@LouisTheSEGANerd that's great! I was looking into it for a fangame project myself so I wanted to know how feasible this is, although I assume it would take more space on the cartridge... while the fangame won't be a real SMS game i wanna put in the effort to at least make it convincing.
@LouisTheSEGANerd16 сағат бұрын
@@pepearmstrong3239 yeah it takes up more room as you would except. For my own games with FM support I had separate FM + PSG soundtracks but had the audio levels setup so that you could have both versions play at the same time for a beefier sound. Obviously it isn't as good as a proper FM + PSG version made from the ground up but works as a good compromise and makes sure each system is capable of playing at least one version :)
I wouldn't have known about this game without me looking for a reasonably sized battery pack cart for the master system to sacrifice for my FF1 port, but I'm glad I found it because the history behind this game and the insanity of its early computer RPG systems is something to admire. Shoutout to Sega for giving this game an awesome soundtrack when the original had none!

The original arcade music sounds so awesome, with all those PCM percussions and drums! I hope you will make a remix for the Sega Mega Drive next, I think the SMD port has a weak soundtrack
@LouisTheSEGANerdАй бұрын
@@mortenera2294 tbh I hadn't even listened to the arcade version before reading your comment (I used the megadrive version to make the master system fm version, and then that to make this 😅). Apart from the drums I prefer how the MegaDrive sounds lol.
@danmakumanАй бұрын
The MD port had to compress 1 MB into a 512Kb ROM so there was no space for PCM percussions. Aside for the weak FM drums I still think it sounds good.

Sounds great! Just like in the TFIII video, even the lack of more instruments aren't a problem as long as the core elements are intact. Maybe there can be a problem if the drums were FM. IIRC the OPN series can use the Channel 3 EXT. mode, so it can help.

Beautiful arrangements like this make me daydream about what if Yamaha had developed a CMOS YM2203 back in the 90's. It would have been a killer handheld console audio chip.

I'm not a big fan of the SN76489. It's undeniably better when there were 2 of them playing together like on some arcade games (e.g. Wonderboy in Monster Land). BUT, I agree that your cover sounds really good and I'm sure Motoi Sakuraba would have the same appreciation. ;-)
