Star Wars is fine, there's just awfully lot of this disney wars fanfiction around I didnt think TFA was good, had significant flaws but I was hopeful what they were going to do with Luke Sadly he was never featured, only had Jake Skywalker Thats when I startes to mentally separate Star Wars and disney wars Only thing disney has made that has easily gotten through the barrier is Andor How an ok chatracter from an ok film gets the best piece of live action Star Wars since the OT is beyond me

Darker side of witholding information is because they want to feel clever by subverting expectations Where you give the audience 2 then another 2 but then reveal the anwser was actually C No you aren't clever because audiences didn't guess that where outside of the movies theres context that makes the anwser C or the context ia given after the reveal

also don't forget about ambiguity, sometimes its better to say nothing and let the audience imagination fill in the blanks, like if character's backstory is uninteresting its better to say nothing than spend time explaining things to the audience, movies has a limited time, 90 mins to 120 mins, use it wisely
@EnterTranscend

Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Two iconic trilogies and both have simplistic stories. I hate when stories are convoluted because the author is trying to be so smart or poetic. If I don't know what's going on, or who characters are, then I lose interest. Jurassic Park, Jaws, Finding Nemo, The Revenant, etc. All are simple, yet powerful, films.

It's easy to over simplify good storytelling with a single word. To give a counter example, you don't know how Vito knows Tattaglia is a pimp - it's very important to the story, but it's intentionally passed over. You also aren't told why a high schooler is best friends with a disgraced nuclear physicist. Cohen bro stuff has a strong focus on intentional ambiguity. Good vs bad writing is more subtle than just being clear.
@EnterTranscend
@EnterTranscend Ай бұрын
@jamesdavis3851 That is very true. But this video is just focused on one element of good writing. Clarity is about communication, which you need to be a good writer. I'd say clarity is, in general, much harder than ambiguity, and by knowing how to be clear first, it will make you much better at intentional ambiguity. Being misunderstood is much easier than being understood.

It makes me think of what a friend was telling me regarding superhero movies. There's a common argument that superhero movies are played out, and nobody wants superheroes anymore. But that's not really true. They don't want bad (or mediocre) superhero movies. As for Star Wars specifically, I'm frustrated at how something that used to bring so many people together has become a point of such contention. That honestly makes me sad. So I try to focus more on enjoying the parts I liked, than picking arguments about the rest.

I think that's a very fair statement. I think the new ones are riding too much on nostalgia and not copying the things that matter; i.e. The force, the play between good and evil, and at their worst they are upending the original intent of the force and inverting it's morality with shows like 'The Acolyte'.

This train of logic can apply in so many different ways. I won't name any names, but there's been a number of occasions where I watch something, and the moral is just blatantly explained through expository dialogue. It's one thing for a character to have an important realization, but it's another thing entirely for said character to make a whole speech about doing the right thing and have everyone else just go along with it. This destroys any sense of intrigue most of the time. When someone will just blatantly explain to the audience what they want them to take away, the magic is lost. A viewer should be able to figure out the purpose on their own merits. Of course, there are exceptions to this. Confrontations are a great way to handle tough situations that need a lot of dialogue. And in the case of a TV pilot, there's only so much you can do since you have to establish the world and its characters. But most of the time, it's certainly best to avoid falling into this trap.

Abrams doesn’t use McGuffins he’s just a terrible writer that makes things up to get out of a corners he wrote himself into and calls it a “mystery box.” Studio execs finally have him figured out and don’t throw money at him anymore. The true McGuffin is the Hitchcock one, an object that gets the action going and is irrelevant, the suitcase in Pulp Fiction, the Falcon in Maltese Falcon etc.

This is all very wrong. A macguffin is a plot device that just arbitrarily keeps the story moving forward. Its the key they find that solves the problem the writer couldn't write out in a meaningful way. 100% wrong. Definition of Macguffin: an object, event, or character in a film or story that serves to set and keep the plot in motion despite usually lacking intrinsic importance. Its something NOT important to the story. So when the characters get out of a situation or advance the plot and it feels cheap, it was probably because they found a macguffin that let them advance in the plot.
@EnterTranscend
@EnterTranscend 2 ай бұрын
It sounds like you're talking about a Plot Coupon, which is a MacGuffin that when you find it, does something. For example, the 'Sith Wayfinder' from 'Rise of Skywalker': once they find it it tells them how to get to Exegol. I agree that this is a very poor MacGuffin, because it takes most of the focus of the story and then by the time they find it it's time for the final badguy battle. A very poor use of a MacGuffin IMO.
