Hi I was watching one of your Capri videos for some help - my son Michael, living here in France has a 1985 2.0S. I came across, by chance this video featuring Will Greene’s Mini - I am Will’s dad!! 😊

Hey Jimmy my partner paid out $7,000 aud to two mechanical firms to fix her 1994 xj6 jaguar and they took the car by tow truck and returned it by tow truck not being able to get it going but big handout for cash. Some people have no shame. I watched your video about the crankshaft sensor thought this dude knows what he’s talking about. I got a $22 part from China arrived quickly after the local suppliers quoted nine times more! Anyway came with a three pin connector not two so I took a gamble chopped them both soldered with my Parkinson’s hand put the shrink wrap onto it fitted it back on and not expecting it to start it fired on first crank and ran like a dream, we love it and I got a few kudos wink wink nudge nudge haha all thanks to you mate. I really appreciate it. This car hadn’t gone for three years and now it’s a dream motor. Thank you number one. Your the man...no doubt about that. Cheers Chris.

Wow. That's such a nice post to read Chris. Thank you so much. I always feel pleased when I learn that one of our videos has been enjoyed, or has helped someone out in some way. It means a lot, so, thank you. I'm learning about these things as I go. I'm far from being a qualified mechanic, but I like trying to do as much as I can myself on my cars. Sounds like your missus had a pretty bad experience with that garage. It pisses me off to think people act like that with no remorse. Still, I'm so glad your now sorted and that you can enjoy your X300 once more. All the best. Cheers buddy. 👍

Hi Jimmy! Love watching your videos. I'm pretty cack-handed but I'd love to learn how to fix some of these older cars. I'm thinking of buying a cheap Mk6 one from Autotrader to tinker with. How did you learn to do the basics? Do you have any advice for someone who wants to start? I've got a 2014 Hyundai 1.6 diesel but they seem more complicated to work on than these small petrol cards of the 2000s. Plus, I've always had a soft spot for this mark Fiesta because it was the first car I ever drove! 😁
@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall 8 күн бұрын
Hi Adam. Thanks very much for your kind words buddy. Means a lot. 😀 Well, let me start by saying that I'm by no means a trained mechanic, but I'm more than happy to give you my advice! 🤣 First, and most importantly, prepare safely before working on a car. If you're working with major electrics, always disconnect your battery from the negative terminal before you start. And NEVER go under a car suspended in the air on a slope or without axle stands. I've seen many do so using just a jack and I cringe with horror. Second, do your research on the job itself. I've used advice from friends, books, internet forums and other KZbin videos, which have been very useful to take notes from as part of my preparation. In the case of this job, a big sheet to catch the steering fluid spills stopped any mess on my drive! 😁 Third, be prepared to set aside sufficient time to do something. Sometimes, a "10-minute job" can take 10 minutes, but sometimes it can take a day. The last thing you want is to find yourself with your car in bits and needing to be somewhere at the same time! Fourth, get an array of good tools. Socket sets and wratchet spanners for sure. They don't have to be expensive. Just decent. I recently bought an induction heater for about £170 to help remove the rusty nuts and bolts on my Mk7 Fiesta (Episode 202). It was a god-send. Trust me, on a Mk6, you'll have some rusty nuts and bolts! Don't forget Santa's on his way soon too, so... 😉! Fifth, think about each step logically as you go. If you don't need to remove something, don't remove it. Some jobs look incredible daunting at first, but in reality, they're just simply things to unbolt and bolt on, and not always that hard. Sixth, take steps to remember where things go back as you remove them. If I'm not sure, I write notes, or take before-and-after photos. I also use those takeaway tubs to put nuts and bolts in, somethimes several of them, to keep sections separate. It's easy to forget where something goes! 😁 Finally, if you're genuinely uneasy about a job, get someone to help you or let a garage do it. I've been fortunate enough on the occasions where I've needed to use my local place, as they've allowed me to see what they do, giving me the knowledge if I have to do it again myself in the future. I hate being defeated with a job on a car, but sometimes, even I have to concede! 😅 I hope this helps you out somewhat. Don't ever be afraid to ask for assistance from anyone. Remember, every day is a school day! All the best. Cheers. 👍

Did you reuse all the bolts or buy new ones ?
@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall 10 күн бұрын
Hi Tim. For the bottom arm itself, yes. I reused the 2 large bolts that held it to the underside of the car. In the end, I did the same with the other arm too. Now, the pinch bolts and stud bolts are a different story. They were so badly damaged, I did replace these. If you check out episode 202, you'll see that I purchased an induction heater to get them off, and see the new bolts that I fitted. Hope that makes sense. 👍

@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall 11 күн бұрын
This problem began occurring at the back-end of Episode 207, after I'd replaced one of the fuel injectors. I did consider the battery at that time. However, what swung me away from that was the fact that the turning over of the engine was intermittent. On the first turn of the key, it would be too slow. One the second, you'd just hear a clicking relay, and nothing more. Then on the third, it would start instantly. No pattern. Totally random. If it was the battery, it would have just got slower and slower, and then do nothing at all. All I can say is that since replacing the starter motor, it's turned over every single time and it still has the same battery. The reason I didn't buy a new one was simply due to the fact that the replacement was gifted to me. Had I not had this option, I probably would have bought a new or reconditioned unit. Cheers. 👍

Cheers Eamo. Yeah, my mate plugged in his laptop before I fitted the injector in episode 207. The fact that the turnover of the engine was intermittent (sometimes perfect, sometimes slow and sometimes just a clicking relay), the starter motor seemed the logical step to tackle. In the end, replacing it seemed to work, and Reggie and I actually went out in it to another car meet, as you'll see in the next episode. BTW, loving the "JK"! 👌

Do you mean why the knocking began in the first place, or what the car was like after the repair? For the former, I can only think that the strut was damaged as a result of general wear and tear from going over bumps. Can't see it being anything else. Certainly not crash damage. For the latter, absolutely spot-on. The car drove like a dream. We no longer have it any more, but it was still handling speed humps with ease up to that point. Hope that helps.

Use some heat on it! It looks as if you have a sticking caliper - the inside face of the disc is rusty, so a caliper replace or rebuild is required. Otherwise you'll still have unequal braking.
@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall Ай бұрын
I was thinking that the caliper was fine, given that I could compress the piston without any issues. Is what you're saying a factor of why I had uneven wear across that inside pad?
@a310man
@a310man Ай бұрын
@ - it is simply not normal that the inside pad would not be in full contact with the disc face, so to have just the inner part of the disc/pad delivering correct braking is very odd indeed. And it's the piston side of the caliper, so perhaps there was something not fitted correctly long ago, or something trapped between pad and disc.
@jimmykneesall

Brilliant placement Jimmy, Tears in my eye, a Burgundy G Reg Sapphire Cosworth @ timestamp 27.17 was the exact year and car that I had been looking for for all my time on this channel. I left the UK NCB Coal Mines in 1985 for overseas in the oil business and sold my S reg Capri II. I used to come back every year and hire a hot hatchback from Town and Country near London Heathrow. They were the only car hire company with great cars like the Peugeot 105 1.6 GTI original.! One mad year coming back , I bought a G reg Cosworth Sapphire and drove it for a month before returning to Brazil. This car is the same year, colour and model ! It was fantastic, I was @ 140 mph or so going to London at night and a Goodyear Eagle burst at night,,, it was stable,,, but took 6 days to get a replacement tyre . My ex sold it after I left to a Scammer ! What a great waste of money that was for 3 weeks fun ! Wouldn't change that memory for all the money in the world ! Man you should have so many more subscribers !

I love your stories Eamo. Always full of fantastic memories. I'm so pleased that this episode has brought them back for you. Sounds like you had a lucky escape with the blowout though! 😲 Reggie and I definitely picked a superb spot. We got traffic from both northbound and southbound carriageways meeting together. Definitely helped with the road closure at the other side of the venue too! 🤣 Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your continued support. Part 2 coming next week! 👍😎

@@jimmykneesall Absolutely waiting on the next post Mate. I would love to be 20 now and have a Focus to work on, with all the kit they have available to them and knowledge. In my days it was just Halfords so I found a 2.0s scrapyard engine and put it into my 1.6 gearbox, added 4 ex track racing tyres. It was great for a month till I raced an RS Ford on the M1 (BANG !!!!) piston through the motor. I then bought a 1600 engine and sold it before going overseas ... In 1985 we had no internet or training or education on mechanics so we just did ,,,, it usually came out bad !

@@eamo106 I have a lot of appreciation for the modern car, but I can never see myself owning one. I just like being able to fix what I can myself on them, something that gets harder to do with newer vehicles. The idea of just swapping out an engine for a scrapyard replacement is very appealing, although I've had to go that far yet! 🤣

@@jimmykneesall In my era Jimmy we worked odd jobs for money for cars, then to the salvage yards for parts at 1/5th of the cost of new. As Georgie Best may have said, I spent all my money on cars, the rest I wasted on girlfriends.
