I'm still trying to wrap my head around the "work ethic sucks" comment. Sammy Hagar's net worth is/was far larger than the net worth/estate value of Eddie. Crazy part? Most of it came from outside of Music. Like Eddie, Sammy didn't hurt himself with his recording and touring successes. How-ever he also found time to start quite a few businesses. A Tequila Company he'd net more $$$ on when he sold it than he'd ever made from music but it wasn't just that alone. A few other pretty profitable endeavors outside of Music have netted him extra millions along the way too. We should all have such lousy "work ethic" if that's all it takes to have Sammy's lifestyle. It's ironic coming from Edward Van Halen.....a man who worked hard on his music for sure but when he stepped away from that it was all about his drug and alcohol addictions. Not exactly the guy I'd expect to hear make such comments about the work ethic of peer who made far better decisions about what to do with his free time away from the band.

Eddie was a Great guitar talent. Nobody can ever take that away from him or his legacy now that he's no longer with us. Alex was a decent drummer but mostly he was just lucky enough to have Eddie for a brother. Not a whole lot there to too excited about. One thing I get out of all this? Dave was probably WRONG, back at the beginning of the band, when he suggested the name of the band should be "Van Halen". Easy to understand why he suggested it. Dave may not be much of a Vocal talent and he may even be the hyper-active nut case that drove Eddie crazy at times but he was/is super savvy about what it takes to entertain and prmote a Rock Band. Nobody argues against his history of success in bring attention to both himself and Van Halen and no doubt doubt he knew from the start that truly unique and noteworthy part of the band was it's amazing GUITAR HERO potential in Eddie. Still though.....that NAME.....by calling the band "Van Halen" it created an us vs the outsiders within a band the two brother's came to see as their own. Since it was called Van Halen that's not especially surprising. It would lead a downfall though. They were DAMNED LUCKY to survive and thrive after Dave left. I've come around to believe something Sammy Hagar's said about leadership in Van Halen. He stated that when he was in the band he ran this band and before him David Lee Roth ran the band. I wouldn't have said I was so sure about that back when I first heard it in the 1990s. It could easily have been a pissed off comment from an angry Sammy Hagar..... but now I think history has proven this out as a fact. We know Mike Anthony was treated like a hired player and then discarded as if that was all he ever was. The big indication that Sam was right though? Piss poor out-comes when Ed and Alex were pretty clearly were running things after Sam was gone. The directionless MESS that the band became tells a story that supports the idea that it was indeed the band's two Vocalists that ran the show during the years we now call the successful years with records and tours worth pointing to as I look back.

Sam has the lousy work ethic? That's some funny stuff right there. The guy who has been in 2 successful bands and a solo career bigger and better than all but a very few other artists also found time to start a Tequila Company and no small number of other businesses that have made him obscenely wealthy, well in excess of anything Van Halen earned for Alex or Ed. This is the guy they want to say has a "lousy work ethic"? That's pretty funny coming from the guy who spent pretty close to entire decade toothless and looking like a homeless bum on a combination of Meth and Cocaine. I loved Eddie's playing when he was clean and sober but there is an expression about "rocks and glass houses" that comes to mind here as he speaks to anyone's work ethic. Sam once said, "When I was in this band. I was leading the band. When Dave was in it he ran it" I tend to believe that pretty whole-heartedly these days. The only time Ed and an Alex ever saw any success was when one of these two vocalists were there and running the show. This seems really obvious now in hind-sight. After Sam was gone. Eddie was running the band and it just didn't work out. A Great Guitar player and a Leader are not the same thing and the band having your name doesn't make you the guy who should be running the business of a band at this big stage level. God forbid you make the mistake of thinking that it does when you don't have what it takes. The band wasted way too many years after Sam left. By the time they found their way back to Dave. It was too late for much more than a nostalgic reunion tour that only proved to me that there is never any going backward. Dave at 60+ and no Mike Anthony........the band was a hollow shadow of what it had been prior to 1985 and no where even remotely close to what had been when at it's most polished and refined to Hard Rock perfection in the 1990s.

The shitty business arrangement that was their MTV appearance shoulda never happened. Irving Azoff ought to be fucking ashamed of himself for sooooo many things that he let happen to this band. They had the great Mitch Malloy ready to go and they scared him off by doing that stupid shit with Dave who they had no intention of hiring.
