Vajont dam disaster (1963) in Italy was also caused by quick filling of water capacity ignoring this soil mechanics effect on a formerly known instable slope of Toc Mountain. This mechanism triggered a deeper rockslide, according your description: increasing water pression reducing shear resistance.

Furthermore the front of rockslide from Toc Mountain draw a letter M.. curiously few hours before disaster a large Number of young men in Lavarone, organized a blasfemy rally procession against Virgin Mary. A Priest in Casso Village had in former time a vision about this disaster... 😢😢

It really depends how you look at it, when you use your pen to show near vertical bonds, your waving it all over the place it doesn't make sense, I see a strong triangle shape of bonds in the lower left , a few long lengths going at about a 55 degree angle from the bottom to the upper left, then the bonds branch out to the right, but really I see it like a rorschach test , the bonds are where you see them. Not really. This doesn't make sense.

What’s the different between the damp soil that collapsed and the damn soil with high surface tension? He never poured water on the second pile of damp sand

That is a consequence of actual draw with CAD systems, you are warried with all those commands and lose the idea. There are differences between an idea and making his blueprints for constrution. I have to sketch everything before make any design, I have to see in my mind how it works, and also incorporate my sketch in blueprints. I have been doing so, since I got my Civil Engineering degree, 50 Years ago. In fact, if you can not draw with your Owns hands you are not and Engineer. (Excuse my English, it is not like, it usted to be).

nice video, I was always wondering if there is any chance of a bolt failing in shear to fly off like they do when they fail in tension.Good that it cannot

I have had the job and proverlidge for working for Prof for 23 years; when I was working at Imperial College London. He was the most pleasant and generous man; with both his time and interest he showed everyone, who had a question or did work for him. Truly a gentleman from a rair bread of gentlemen.

A perfect example of over-reinforced flexural failure where concrete fails in compression zone via crushing prior to yielding of steel.
@anubhab_IITG
@anubhab_IITG Жыл бұрын
Guys, this is a Diagonal compression failure which is a shear controlled mode of failure. For those, whoever saying its an over reinforced mode of flexural failure, this is not correct, because in over reinforced flexural failure cracks do not propagate diagonally, instead the compression concrete fails due to crushing before yielding of steel bars. Here, this is a shear mode of failure occurring diagonally at around 45 degree which propagates deeper into the beam originating from compression side. Its a diagonal compression failure (shear failure). I wonder how come people saying it's a flexural failure. Just see the crack its penetrating diagonally at an angle of 45 degree from compression side. I hope I clarified. To confirm the aforementioned point see how over reinforced flexural failure occurs, its never diagonal. Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aanaapJpaNqBgKM

I may be dumb, but for the hole in the cup demonstration, wouldnt a nicer explanation be "the water flowing out pushes the cup up so that the cup glides on the water instead of the grippy wood"

Thank you Sir, i was building in Fiji and we struggled to make good concrete using coral for aggregate. The shapes were too rounded compared to NZ where we had sharp edged rock in the mix. This clearly explains that .
