On this cruise it was incrediblely calm on the way down and moderate on the way back, but it's so variable it's hard to say. Iona is such a large ship she handles rough seas very well, most of the time you'd hardly know you were at sea at all!

Yes, I booked a saver fare interior cabin, so didn't choose my specific cabin, but was very happy with it. It's noticeably smaller than a balcony one, so having previously had a balcony I did miss the extra space, but perfectly sufficient for staying in and and some cruises less than half the price of a balcony!

Hi stayed in the hotel a few times always on the second floor last stayed in room 205 it was clean few marks on the window but kettle cups clean bed was fine very comfortable main ac did not work but the new one next to the bed works fine

Ah, interesting. Maybe they are gradually improving it then. I've stayed there a couple of times before but this sadly it seemed to have gone downhill as this was by far the worst room I've had in any hotel. Would be lovely to see it properly cared for, it's such a nice building!

Yes, i think it was a long time ago, then a best western for a while before going independent. Sadly the old Travelodge carpets and furniture are old in poor repair now and looking a bit sorry for themselves!

I didn't realise I could get a tram back to the ship. I'm on Iona this December. Can you remember what number it is please?

@@joffee516 it's very easy, there were several that went to the cruise terminal, the tram stop is right by it and is called 'Wilhelminaplein'. There were maps around, but I used the citymapper app as I could use my mobile abroad. Have a great trip!

I grew up in the North during the lates 80's to late 90's. Back then places like Metro Centre and Eldon Square were absolutely heaving with people, and at christmas time it was wall to wall with people. It had every kind of shop you could think of. Can't believe how sad and empty it now looks. Completely soulless. Such a sorry state and ai fear it will never return to its former glory. Only a matter of time before it closes for good and turns into an abandoned shell like its American counterparts.

Great choice for a first cruise, it’s extra special at Christmas and a slightly more even itinerary this year. So good in fact I’m considering booking for this year too!

Hi Bob, thanks for your video. Really enjoy seeing more about Arvia and the port stops. I will be doing the same trip in the next few months. I am a bit worried about getting accidental phone data charges on board arvia. We want to use our phones for photos but not internet use. How did u protect against charges as I have heard of high maritime bills when returning home... Also how easy was it to find the tour bus? Thanks

I'm sure you'll have a great time! Tour bus was very easy, one actually stops where the p&o shuttle drops you off, or as did you will find them all over. My top mobile data tip is treat the ship like is is an aeroplane, whenever you get on the ship switch aeroplane mode on like you are boarding a plane. That way you avoid connecting when not in port, but can still use the WiFi should you want to buy Internet or use the app to book things. Hope that helps!

The indoor pool in the skydome was usually well used but the outside pools were quiet, I found they were nicely heated so if you can stand the cold getting in and out it was lovely.

Totally agree that the Metrocentre is a shadow of its former self and there a lot of empty units. However in it's defence this video seems to have been taken quite early on the morning as some of the places had not opened. It does get busy at times in the evenings and at the weekends. I did notice the video missed out the Platinum Mall completely. Over the last few years this part of the mall has concentrated all the new and refurbished stores. Concentrating on the Green Mall does tend to give a false impression. On the positive side, JD Sports opened a new larger store last year, Zara opened a larger store earlier this year and Sports Direct moved back into the Mall a few months ago. I read in the press that Primark opened their expanded store yesterday (May 14 2024) . I totally agree the move to online shopping and the isolation of CV19 has hit retail hard but I also blame the previous owners of the Metrocentre for part of the decline. During the Intu-Metrocentre days there was a move away from leisure to shopping and dining. They moved away from the original mixed concept to purely a retail offering. The new owners seems to be heading more to a mixed offering. The Clip-n;climb seems to be popular with the kids and the recent opining of the Everlast Gym as part of the Sports Direct takeover of the old Debenhams unit is a good step forward. A planning application has gone in to convert the top floor of the Blue multi story car park into a rooftop 5 a side football complex. I'm not sure if this will ever happen but if I was 40 years younger it would be exciting. Work is well underway to house the new NHS Diagnostic Centre above H Beauty in Town Square One. As in nature, adapt or die I guess..

Shocking and sad to see the changes online shopping and Covid has had on Retail Parks/Shopping hubs. The Metro Centre was the largest and most vibrant shopping complex in Europe. Huge car parks, full. Overspill car parks...Coach trips from all over the country to enjoy a visit to this splendid "wonder". Fast forward to..... 2024, People don't seem to realise that the "convenience" of ordering everything from home changes and will finally destroy the whole shape of your life. Isolation is not the answer surely? People need people. Where will it all end.🤔
