Wouldn't it be nice if there were caps to slip onto the leading ends of those stick shuttles to keep the warp threads out of them? Thank you for this video. I am trying to help a non-weaving friend who wants her first project to be a mohair scarf! I think this might change her mind to something with less sticky threads.

I just found your video and am going to try this. Please explain your floating selvages. I’ve only used one warp thread in a slot and go over or under. It looks like you have one in a slot and one in a hole.
@loopsandleather
@loopsandleather 5 ай бұрын
Having a float in the slot on each side would be perfectly fine. I had actually set those up as plain weave along the edge and used them as the "floating selvedge". Using a float in the slot would be more straight forward and effective if you don't want the plain weave on each side of the pinwheels. Happy Weaving!

Some looms use texsolv cords to tie up the treadles and shafts. The cords have small holes to put a peg into for adjusting the height. These are used as the pegs.

One of the reasons why the down shed gets sloppy is because the hole threads get stretched up out of true and stretched down out of true, while the slot threads just literally don’t move. they appear to move because sometimes they’re at the top of the heddle, and sometimes they’re at the bottom of the heddle, but that’s because the heddle itself is moving. What this means is that the same tightness on stretched threads is a little bit not tight on unstretched threads, namely the slot threads. If you stick some thing that will eat up a little bit of length like a dowel or a piece of skinny PVC pipe, you can park that all the way in the back and depending on how much looser it is than the threads through the holes, will determine how far back your length equalizer fits around the back beam. But that should tighten up your slot threads so that They will match the tension of the threads through the holes. I hope that helps.
@loopsandleather
@loopsandleather 8 ай бұрын
With the variety of fibers in this warp in addition to the "boa" yarn which sticks to itself and anything next to it, a dowel behind the heddle wouldn't solve the issue.

I use a counter balance loom for linen because linen doesn’t stretch at all, a counter balance loom will drop all the other shafts when you lift a shaft, so all the other strings are pulled down as you lift the others. It’s just not possible on a table loom but if you release your shaft before pushing your reed back it might all work out because you’re holding your current weft pick in place while the tension balances back out, so pull your reed then drop your shaft then push the reed back. Once you use a counter balance loom on linen you understand why they exist 😂

The towels look really nice! I would have put in a tension beam in the back with the linen threads. Just to make the shed clearer and the weaving smoother. Spraying the linen warp with water is a must in our dry nordic climate. We also put wet towels in the back on the warp, or a bucket of water underneath the loom to increase the moisture level in the air. But all that is to prevent the linen threads from snapping which is our big problem. If you do the same on the counter march, try a tension beam! Congratulations on the beautiful towels and thank you for a nice video :)

I believe your problem comes from the variety of fibers you put in the warp. Cotton, boucle, linen, etc. Linen has absolutely no stretch. You've combined it with fibers that do stretch. That's my 2 cents

I’ve never seen those combs before!! I do have hand cards and a drum carder, but what I use (and continue to use since I began my fibre journey 5y ago) is a dog *comb* (not brush!). Here’s how I do mine: Do this before washing. Don’t disturb the locks (DON’T “open” them up!). Gather 2-4 (depending on thickness of each lock) keeping the cut end level with each other. Hold securely and start combing. When that half is done, turn, and do the other half. It’s really quick to do. I have just finished doing a 2.2kg corriedale fleece. Now, washing is a breeze as all the dirt has been removed in the carding. I have my “own design” method for washing fleece using baskets (2, with the fibre “sandwiched” in between to prevent agitation. Wash in small amounts in a plastic container (150g max) is best. That sounds painfully slow, but it really saves on water!!!!!

Yes, if this fleece weren't already a hot mess from a suint bath combing locks would have been much nicer!

Thanks for clarifying for me how pinwheel happens! Sort of seems to me that a series of holding sticks, one for each of the patterns - as traditional backstrap weavers do - would be easier that all this picking up. You wouldn't be able to use the rigid heddle for beating, you'd have to use a beater stick. Don't get me wrong. I have endless patience for pickup weaving when creating images, but this kind of fine repetition.... well, I guess it's still faster that stranded knitting.
@loopsandleather
@loopsandleather Жыл бұрын
You certainly could use string heddles to tie up the pattern and not use the heddle to beat. It is a time consuming pattern on the rigid heddle loom!

Congratulations!! I adore my table loom! They are so versatile and you don't have to deal with the added complexity of tying up treddles like the floor looms. Where do you need help? I will say if you don't have a raddle and lease sticks I would either make or purchase both. IMO they should come mandatory with every loom. ;)

Hi Klaire, how much yarn will depend on how large you make it. I can tell you that I haven't used one full skein of any of the 4 main colors of Vanna's choice making 9 owl squares & the alternating flower squares. So for the baby blanket size approximately 200 yards (or less) of each color. You will need more of the background color, and then a small amount of black.
