As a kid, I used to live in Ireland on the flight path out of Dublin airport. The first aircraft I went up in was a Viscount from Dublin to Heathrow. I Went with family on the Boeing 720 to cork & returned by train, it was a day out deal Air Lingus were doing at the time. I also remember the Corvair in different colours, I think it was British United as well as Air Lingus colours. We also used to fly on BEA vanguards on some trips. BOAC 707’s used to fly out of there a lot & also I remember seeing the first landing of the new BEA Hawker Siddeley Trident at Dublin. Great days, I bet this film had interesting information on it before being overdubbed with repetitive music.

That take-off in the 720 looks like it was a runway 35 departure, you can make out the hangars and the old runway 12/30 below.

Not quite a 707. It's EI-ALA, a Boeing 720. Aerlínte Éireann/Irish International Airlines flew three 720s from 1960 until 1964 when they also started taking delivery of "full size" Boeing 707-348Cs . The 720s were retained for a few more years but were often leased out until the last was sold in 1972. The 720 was related to the 707 but was a different aeroplane in many ways, being optimised for medium range routes rather than true long haul.

Look how close the public are to the aircraft, a plane spotters dream in those days. The only way you can get that close to a plane now is if you are getting on or off the thing, which is a sad reflection of the world we're currently living in.

don't be foolish aj chef, integration is the answer. Think of all the clever "new" kids and what they will do for Ireland, the economy, culture, energy. Old civilisations need new influxes to survive. Do you want us to become like SOME of the people of the uk who are incapable of renewal of their society? The Irish know life is different to the past, change is sometimes good and sometimes not but is INEVITABLE. Better manage it that fight it - if you fight it, you'll always lose

The terminal building shown at the start still exists and continues in daily use, but the idea of a bus rolling up to it today, as shown in the film, is out of the question. It is now completely invisible from outside the new terminals, which dwarf and enclose it completely, and it can only be entered on foot after you've passed security. There's something symbolic in that, I always think. Something about the world becoming too big, even as it gets smaller.

Willie - I really enjoyed your video as I was trying to spot our house in some the footage. We lived on the original Collinstown Lane between runways 16/34 and 05/23. I don't suppose you have any stills from around that time? I'm trying to find our when the two runways were extended as at that point the original Collinstown Lane was cut off (on both sides of the extended runways) and the present road was built. My folks say it was very early 60's but as I was only born in '60 I have no memory of our 'lane' being the main road. Any dated photos you have might help me.

Great footage. Aer Lingus's Carvairs were delivered in 1963 (2) and 1964 (1) so that would date those images as from 1963 or later. aviationtraderscarvair.com/production.htm

Pretty cool footage. Was your dad the designer of the green top livery on the Viscounts?
@EricIrl
@EricIrl 7 жыл бұрын
The green tops appeared before the stripes and shamrocks. The early version of the green top livery featured an Irish flag on the tailfin. The Viscounts and the DC-3s carried this earlier version for a few years. The Viscounts later had the shamrock and stripes but the DC-3s retained the flag version until they were disposed of. Nice to see the DC-3 in Silver City colours. That was a colour scheme option in the original Airfix DC-3/C-47 plastic kit. Interesting also tio see the old Piers A and B under construction. I'm sure that places the shots to around 1964. The Carvair shots showing it taxying on the ground are excellent. They look like a French airport to me - Le Touquet?
