How does a no thumb bowler do a back up?
@nothumbbowler1802

I"ve seen some other bowlers do it well. One person in league threw back up whole lane for 10 pins. I have to practice it a lot to just throw the slightest back up hook. Not something just anyone can learn how to do.

Thanks. I could make a whole video about just that. I think it someone can hold the ball fingertip then simpler is better. Putting fingers in deeper, such as to second joint as I do, makes it easier to hold ball. But harder to get it feeling comfortable. I could update video, but I have another one about getting finger inserts comfortable. Since then was I've been doing is adding a lot more forward pitch to fingers. Which then allows for looser and more comfort with inserts. If the ball feels like it wants to slip out, and inserts aren't too loose, I'd look at forward pitch for sure.

To me its my dick bigger than yours argument. Same in golf, where i should have continued with graphite shaft instead went with "friendly suggestion" steel shaft makes you golf like a pro. Loved the consideration of driving to and fro a tournament might as well throw a lighter ball and enjoy the game. And i started my thumbless journey with a 7lbs house with really small finger holes and seeing encouraging results by the second game. Really enjoyed this video Saul, only confirmed many of my own suspicion for this lovely game.

I would think that would be incredibly difficult to do on a sport short and be accurate playing different angles, from different areas of the lane. Tom Smallwood has a really weird arm-swing. He seems to get away with it b/c although he palms the ball like a one hand no thumb bowler, he does put his thumb in the ball. Although with thumb pointed forward, instead like backwards like everyone else who uses thumb.

At this point I'm thinking a big reason some people may have trouble staying behind ball is how ball is drilled. For example, if someone can take a light houseball and stay behind with practice shots, but can't with their ball, then maybe change grip size, or sink grips deeper into the ball. I've done a lot of experimentation with pitches, grips, grip depth. Practicing motion with a 10 lbs house ball could help.
@Purplenirvanaa
@Purplenirvanaa 3 ай бұрын
@@nothumbbowler1802 this could be true as well, my ball was drilled very shallow to where my fingers can’t sink deep into the ball. I can only comfortably put them in to the first joint on the finger. My ball is 14lbs and with only my finger tips being in, the backswing puts stress on my wrist so I know that affects my throw as well. I’ve been looking for a channel like this but I haven’t seen many so I subbed right away lol

I just got my first ball a few months ago. I wanted to hook it so bad I tried everything and nothing worked. Two finger no thumb was a disaster as I kept coming over the top of the ball. I settled on bowling straight with traditional grip and focusing on fundamentals like footwork and keeping my hand low and inside the ball. Got pretty good bowling straight, but that gets boring so I tried two finger no thumb again and threw the most beautiful hook across the lane and into the pocket! Now I'm bowling close to 200 with only a couple months practice. I think the key is to try to not over hook the ball. With good fundamentals, the two finger no thumb grip will do all the work for you. I still revert to traditional grip for spares. Not ideal, but that's the only way I've found a little success in this very difficult game.

No thumb, One handed bowler here. After watching this, I've yet to find anyone to help me grow with my approach, as I'm in fact NOT a cradle bowler. Played basketball as an over 6 footer for years, and the few times i bowled, prior to me getting heavily involved at my alley, Ive never used grips, as I put my entire 2 fingers into ball and grip it like a basket ball with other three fingers. I have experimented without grips. In one way it feels better. My fingers feel the ball more. I like the firmness. The problem is the ball wants to slip off my hand a little, causing me to pull it. If looser grips make ball harder to hold, of if you just have pain from squeezing the ball to much, consider adding forward pitch to finger holes. Makes it much easier to hold ball, and I can relax much more this way. 3. If the pain is from the back of fingers pushing against grips, I have another video of how I make round grips, which I find much more comfortable. 4. you can also play around with sinking the grips deeper into holes 5. @nothumbbowler1802 9 ай бұрын
Thanks. In your case I guess it depends on rev rate. I used to throw the ball 12mph when I used to bowl with my thumb. Which was kind of matched for the rev rate I used to have back then. Although to be honest, it may be best to find a coach to look at your game first. When I switched to bowling w/o my thumb, I started out with my old 12MPH ball speed and it took some times to learn how to generate more speed. The trick is getting a more smooth form that just happens to transfer more energy to the ball. Unless you also have a very low re rate, 12.5 mph indicates you're probably not efficiently transferring energy from your legs and slide into the ball.

This is probably something you'd have to post video of yourself on forums to try getting helpful feedback. If there is anyone near you who gives good lessons, that's usually going to be better than asking the Internet. But maybe if you have trouble getting into a proper finish position, just do foul line release drills. Followed by 2, then 3 step drills. Other people have videos explaining this. That way you can slowly teach your body how to finish.

This reminds me somewhat of my own path. 30 years ago I bowled league with a 15 pound ball. I was 18 at the time. Since then I've only bowled on rare occasions. Outings with the kids, birthday parties etc. I stopped taking it seriously a long long time ago. Couple weeks ago on another one of these outings with the kids, I was really getting miffed that I couldn't seem to bowl well anymore. I wasn't spectacular when I was younger, but I had a 180 average which was OK I guess. When I went out to bowl the other day I couldn't break 150. The 15 pound ball seemed harder to manage, and it only made matters worse that I was stuck using house balls. I was so miffed that I did so poorly, that I went back the next day to try to see if I could bring my scores up. I think I bowled nine strings. Somewhere around the fifth string I was getting tired so I decided to go with a lighter ball. I actually picked up a 10 pound house ball, and decided to try two finger so I could get some reasonable hook out of it. Suddenly I started banging strikes. My next few strings was a 168, a 177, a 180, and a 190. At one point I had seven strikes in a row. She was hooking into the pocket amazingly well, and I felt like I was really onto something, and at the same time, I suddenly had an intensely reinvigorated interest in bowling again. Only this time, I am not going to try to get into a league using nothing but house balls. I ordered my own balls, 12 pounders, and I'm going to continue to explore the two finger method. I had never used it before, but it seemed to be very consistent for me. I probably would get laughed at using a 10 pound ball, but I have a feeling the 12 will be just right. It's light enough that I can fire it like a rocket, get some good revs, but it's also heavy enough to carry some energy through the pins. Who cares what other people say. I bet anything I will be able to bring my average up over 200 in just a few months after having not bowled for more than half my life. If it works, it works.

Interesting info. Im pretty new to bowling, 1 hand no thumb feels the most consistent and comfortable for me. Got my first ball, bought a used ball to learn the game - got the pro shop to plug the thumb and had the 2 fingers regripped how i thought would be good for me. Now after about a month i think similar to what youve mentioned that id prefer more than just finger tips in the ball, i may just pull the grips out and use the 2 fingers conventional for now until i can find a grip strategy to get down to 1.5 or second knuckle. I wonder if a more circular grip will hit the market like what you made with the tape.
@nothumbbowler1802
@nothumbbowler1802 11 ай бұрын
Some very new bowlers may not know this. The pro-shop may have given you pitched grips. If you take the grips out and flip them upside down, they are oval and not pitched. You could try that gong to second joint. If the oval grips are still too tight, can try going up a size. I like grips as loose as possible, without it slipping out of my hand. Tight grips will constrict arm swing and cause a lot of problems, which you don't realize are coming from fingers being too tight. Going to buddies pro shop or bowlerx and ordering your own bevel knife and glue, can save you a lot of time and aggravation over going into pro-shp for everything. Changing grips is easy, but it's best to have a bevel knife to take off excess glue that remains. I wish they make circular grips for going to second joint.But try using larger sized oval grips first. That should get you down to 2cd joint.

Interesting. I've experimented at times with no grips. In theory I think it's best because it gives most feel of ball in hand. But it can be rough on fingers if you don't have whole sizes and pitches correct. I can throw ball ok with grip for ring finger and taking grip out for middle. Maybe I'll play around with that in future. I prefer the 7/8th diameter grips because they give a little more firm feel on ball, than 31/32 size. Over time I've moved to larger grips and more more relaxed grip on ball. I can see how a pro-shop guy may just put in grips based on what fits for finger tips, which can easily be too small if going in to 2cd knuckle. If finger holes are too tight, it really messes my swing. And now I'm about 1/4 forward on finger pitches - which just makes it easier to hold the ball.

I have a 12lb and 14lb hyroad. Should probably make a comparison at some point. I'm not sure telling you what I see in those balls would be helpful, since I doubt we both roll the ball the same way. The 12 lbs core is fine. If flares enough, but would need to have a strong layout to get it to flare close to the 14 lb one. But it still as a 0.035 differential in 12lbs. So the core is really more IQ like. Hy-road is not so strong in oil as other balls. But on the dry, it'll hook hard. In 12lb it's easy to throw through breakpointt and then can be very snappy in dry. 14lbs is a better house shot ball for me. I'd throw some practice games with a 12lb houseball first to be sure about weight. 13 lb core in much closer to 14 lb. 12 or 13lb hustle core is the one I'd avoid.
