It should have come from the factory with the 2.5 liter TR-6 engine and the overdriven transmission as well as that nice bulged bonnet. My Spitfire has a Chevy 3.1 V-6 and 33 inch tires. It was at the dump on a trailer ready to be trashed forever, pretty bad shape. We made an offer and had him take it home to our place. I always wanted that GT 6+ engine in my Spitfire, but it was cost prohibited. And I was just to busy driving the Spitfire.

@@kimmer6 No I live clear a crossed the country. Besides the change to do it right is a body swap. The GT 6 has stronger suspension parts to accommodate the extra weight.

@@Helm-w1q Sorry! I am downsizing my shop and some of these things need to go bye bye. In the 1980's, I had a total of 8 Spitfires of old and new body style and 6 GT-6's of old body style. Most of the suspension components are interchangeable. I did a bunch of frame off restorations. I have one 1976 ''Spitfire'' left but it's a 4 wheel drive car on 33'' tires and Chevy 3.1 V-6 inside. The body was trashed and I bought it from a guy at the dump for $150 and saved the body. No frame. I might get it running again. GM auto trans stuck in 2nd gear.....

The center "console" is not original. About $185 for a piece of plastic from Moss. The the cost of the grille etc. Visor hardware, no visor. The tach is in the speedo hole and vice versa. Too much fuel gauge bounce, check the sending unit. Smiths tach.. electric.. Do you have the original 3 main or a 5 main. Headlight switch should be a toggle if you care about originality. Rear view mirror is a replacement Why do you flick the overdrive if you are not on a hiway or freeway? Does the car have a motor and front and rear bumpers? How about the boot? Single 12 volt battery and switched to negative ground or 2 6 volts and positive ground ? Oil cooler? Original front and rear bumpers?

recently bought an '87 spider with my dad, what a joy it is to ride, nothing compared to modern cars even while being much harder and "worse" to drive theres just something about driving an old sports car which you cant explain. pure bliss.

Very nice car. Definitely a sports car that was well known for its surprising speed and features despite it being a little car. I own a 66 MGB, only differences being it has a toggle headlight switch, is non-OD, has a factory radio, and is a brighter red. I'm wondering if this car has the 3-bearing engine instead of the 5-bearing, because around 1965, they changed the engine to a 5-bearing.

Easy: Is your tach cable driven ( cable trough dash to carb side of motor.) The change to electronic tach and 5 main was October 1964. Keep in mind back in those days cars were registered by the DMV on the sale date, not the manufacturing date. I prefer 3 mains.. I currently have a 1963. Sold my 64 3 years ago, and now looking for a 62. a 66 will be a 5 main if it is the original motor. Give me the motor=er number and I'll give you a correct date. Oh, and the on the tach it should show the manufacturer's name as JAEGER if cable driven, Smiths if electric. PS the second best years were 65,66,67.

I have one of these - Sapphire Blue and the engine has fuel injection using HS6 carbs as the butterflies. It does have the wheel on the correct side though (LOL) though the body was actually from a Californian Spitfire. 1972 GT6 chassis and 78 Spitfire body. Makes a great noise though feels far faster than it actually is - these days would be burned off by most hatchbacks! Great fun to drive - mine has more instruments and no radio and is a bit more tarted up inside!

Yep that's the optional O/D switch, which really does help in some cases as it can reduce engine wear, gearbox wear, and fuel consumption. You get around 29.5 MPG with O/D on at cruising highway speeds. They had this because it was the equivalent of a 'fifth gear'. Only downside is that they're rare in a Mk.1 and are more common in Mk.2 models.

A walk around may have been good before the drive? But she seems to go well. This early collectible MG is missing the centre moulding under the centre dash which usually has a lovely radio speaker grill...

Yeah, the speaker grille definitely ties in well with the rest of the car and they still do make spares of the part, which is good. I still use the mono speaker console for my factory radio. And surprisingly, it is very audible despite only being one speaker.

My guess is that this is a heavily modified Gipsy. For one the original Gipsy transfer box features 2 levers, Red and Yellow, each doing its thing. Here only one lever is fitted which indicates that at least the transfer box is not original.
