For the 4K they raised the contrast & brightness a lot and the saturation a little and it looks much more cartoony!

I just saw it on Prime video and the rendering seems closer to 4k than Blu-Ray. I'm going to end up wondering if they're not "sabotaging" Blu-Ray to sell 4k... :D

Thank you for the continued uploads. Every time I watch one it makes me wonder what exactly people are looking at whenever I see them posting online about how they don't like HDR because it's "darker" than SDR

The perception that SDR content appears brighter is often due to the fact that TVs are typically not calibrated to 100 nits for peak white (in SDR mode), which can cause SDR content to appear unnaturally bright. Additionally, screenshots of online HDR content are often tone-mapped to SDR, which can result in a darker appearance. This combination leads to the misconception that HDR content is dimmer than SDR, even though HDR offers a much wider dynamic range.

SDR is graded at 100 nits. But since most people jack up the brightness on their TV, HDR appears darker because it is "locking" you into the correct nit value.

But the HDR makes a significant difference, that's the point of it :D The resolution and encoding of modern movies standard blurays are usually very good. The 4K then can only offer better encoding and the HDR, which this one clearly does. For me the 4K is the clear winner

@malekomairat6093 Thank you ! There are huge grading differences between the SDR and HDR versions of this title. And you can easily see it from the very first images of this comparison. Better reproduction of highlight areas, more robust compression, and finer reproduction of subtle details and grain texture.While not night and day, for those who prioritize the most satisfying experience, the decision is obvious.

So either the standard bluray is already very good or the 4k bluray doesn't add much in terms of resolution and encoding :/ or maybe my eyes are bad today Also, I hate it so much when HDR is not utilized. Here it's still okayish but there are movies who don't even exceed the 200nits barrier

Perhaps the people claiming there's not much difference between the presentations don't have very good setups at home. The 4K bit rate is insane and looks demonstrably sharper and more refined in resolution, and the HDR is absolutely stunning.

@@jachyra9 Not so much difference when you're watching the comparison like myself at some ungodly hour 😴 on a mobile. Although the op does mention in his review that the difference is subtle so I'll take his word. I'll be grabbing the 4k either way.👍

@@mattmaca We must not take our remarks out of context. In terms of resolution and compression, the improvement is more subtle than radical, but it is indeed observable in many aspects. One only needs to look at the first capture to notice this. And we never claim that the improvement is subtle in HDR. 'HDR grading stands as an essential element of the superiority of this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version.' We create these videos to be watched under respectable conditions. And no, a smartphone is not adequate.

I'll NEVER understand why the show is only available at 1080p on Netflix. It's a shame since they created the show and it's obviously made to be seen on 4k

As far as I know the animation is not rendered in 4K, so 1080p is all there is. So except for HDR, the UHD does not make much of a difference. But I might be misinformed.

Looks nice, I mean you don't see much of a difference in resolution, or encoding. But the HDR is nice. In the introduction when it comes to the MaxFALL average, it seems quite low, the series seems to be pretty dark. But I think the breaks between the episodes drag the average down, that's why it's only 3-4 nits

"Average MaxFall' measurement is likely biased by the inclusion of black bars, inherent to content with a 2.35/2.39 aspect ratio. While excluding these areas would yield more accurate results, this more rigorous approach is significantly more time-consuming for us. So, bear in mind the limitations of this measurement.

The colors aren’t assigned to luminance levels, the image is able to achieve a higher range of color. Luminance is the percentages of colors that make up white. Adding or subtracting them from white which is the way optical discs are encoded is how they yield a color image. I can look at the rgb values on the screen of a 4k disc generated image and recreate the image on any screen. It’s all rgb values at the end of the day.

Let's start from the beginning... Actually, the statement 'the colors are assigned to luminance levels' is used ONLY to clarify the context of how our HDR heatmap works. An HDR heatmap is a visualization tool that does assign specific colors to the luminance values of pixels in an HDR image. Hopefully, this clears up any confusion.

I'll be sticking with the Blu-ray... Just wayyy too much grain on the 4k for me. On VHS I have no problem with grain but on uhd? No thanks. Great comparison.

Waaaaw la finesse de l'image et du grain, c'est vraiment superbe ! bien que l'image à 1:43 du nouveau master me perturbe un peu... Le grain à l'air d'avoir été oublié sur ce plan, la texture de la peau est différente de tout le reste des plan de la vidéo, et surtout, de l'offre spéciale au milieu de l'image, qui extirpe les chiffres "499" du la zone de flou mais pas le .99 qui lui colle, ni les lettres qui sont vraiment sur la même ligne... ; on peut lui trouver étrange le demi flou sur la lettre A de "Save", et la façon d'ont est écrit les lettrages qui entours ce panneau, je suspecte fortement l'utilisation d'une IA pour avoir retouché les (des ?) images, tant c'est typiquement les mêmes genres de défauts que j'ai pu constater sur la dernière version de T2 et d'autres Cameron récents. (n'empêche que c'est globalement très bien fait et un gain de qualité notable)

I would love to buy these movies. I can buy a box with the first 6 movies on blue ray for €30 and 4K box for €88. I’m considering taking the blue ray and safe €58. How is the sound compared to the 4K? It’s still much better on blue ray than from Netflix right??

2004 Bluray (most natural) > 2024 4k (detailed but edge enhanced) > 2019 4k (inferior version of the Bluray, 2k upscale).

2024 4K looks to have zero edge enhancement applied. It’s the most natural looking of all 3 of them. The 2004 Blu-ray looks pretty awful.
