As a 10 year old in 1960, the first 45 rpm record I bought was Walk, Don't Run by the Ventures on Dolton label. At 74, I still have that old record and still aboslutely LOVE that song! Never thought it was the very first surf song ever played until much later when I heard Walk Don't Run 64 and could relate the music to the incoming surf, It all fits!!

Maybe I'm prejudice from playing all the Ventures stuff in our high school band in the early 60s, but the best version is the '59 version - before they got into all the surf nonsense.

When Nokie Edwards left the band, rhythm guitarist, Don Wilson, slid seamlessly into the lead guitar slot and knocked it out of the park. That was great!!!!

As with Charles above, this is, at least somewhat, incorrect! I'm not at all familiar with Don playing lead - though he might have for a short time. Bob Bogle was the original lead player and in my opinion always better that any of the other lead guys, including Nokie and Gerry McGee. Nokie and Gerry were finger pickers while, as far as I have witnessed, Bob was a straight picker. Nokie could do fancy stuff at times, but, again to me, just didn't have quite the direct feel for the original material that Bod did. And he was the guy who played the original hits in the early 60's before Nokie switched to lead. You can see him play the originals in a few KZbin videos where he steps up and digs in - but you have to search. Nokie was originally hired to play bass but eventually made his way to lead with Bob's agreement. Check to see if you can find the BOOK on the Ventures.. It will take a bit of looking but I've read part of it...

@@BURTBROWN -- Easy there, BURTSY. I believe you are, at least, somewhat incorrect. If that isn't Don WIlson up there, then he lent his face out to someone. Nokie was a much better lead player than Bob Bogle. Bob's muffled sound was nowhere near Nokie's sharp, crisp way of playing. Nokie suggested Bob's guitar ability was being stretched in leads and Bob agreed and traded places on bass. The Ventures took off after that.

@@ricenglish4556 LOL!!! You are using a MUCH LATER video in their evolvement and INCORRECTLY pointing out a song WHERE GERRY McGEE IS CLEARLY PLAYING LEAD!!! LOL!! Watch after Don does the INTRO BUT IS NOT PLAYING LEAD, GERRY IS! Yes, that IS DON, no doubt, BUT HE AIN'T PLAYING LEAD!!!!!!! How could you even THINK THAT???? First off, I CLEARLY STATED "IN MY OPINION" ABOUT BOB! You THEN state "The Ventures took off after that." meaning after Nokie took up lead.... THE FIRST HITS WERE WITH BOB, NOT NOKIE!!! (See included photo from early promotional shots) I don't know where you are getting you incorrect information from, BUT it's WRONG!!!! NOKIE WAS ORIGINALLY HIRED AS A BASS PLAYER although when they saw him in a club he was playing lead. YES, HE TECHNICALLY MAY HAVE BEEN A BETTER PLAYER, I just personally feel BOB'S PLAYING ON THE ORIGINALS SOUNDED BETTER - YOU MAY DIFFER, WHICH IS FINE - that's OPINION AND TASTES! Yes, Nokie "suggested Bob's guitar ability was being stretched in leads and Bob agreed and traded places on bass." I have no argument on that... I HAVE STOOD IN FRONT OF THE GROUP - LIVE AND IN PERSON - ON NUMEROUS OCCASION WITH SEVERAL OF THE LEAD PLAYERS INCLUDING BOB, NOKIE, & GERRY. You seem to have come along much later in their careers and are disconnected from when they first started! Here is the early promo picture with Bob On lead and Nokie on bass: duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=promotional+photos+of+%22the+Ventures%22&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.britannica.com%2F99%2F23199-050-EF2120C4%2FVentures.jpg

@@BURTBROWN -- You're a scary guy, BURTSTER. Woah Nellie, hold your horses, cowboy. First of all, your LOL's are absolutely precious. What are you, 4 years old? Second, your CAPITALIZING is either terrifying, or just plain sad. Finally, if you ever get challenged in a dark alley, just tell your would be attackers that you use a lot of exclamation points. That'll get 'em. Don Wilson is playing his usual rhythm and also collaborating in unison on some of the lead with Gerry. Didn't your partner point that out? You probably don't realize that Walk Don't Run 64 was a remake of their original hit, but with Nokie now playing lead instead of Bob. You better tell your partner to fill you in or he gets nothing tonight. Yes, they took off in album sales and had another hit in 1968 with Hawaii 5-0 with Nokie before he left. I'm 69 years old and have been a Ventures fan since I was 6. I'll bet they thought you were a stalker at their shows. There are a lot of innocent people walking around who are not aware of you. The Ventures initially played on Mosrite Guitars. Then they started using the Fender guitars later. Mostites were manufactured in Southern California.
@BURTBROWN
@BURTBROWN 4 ай бұрын
Sorry, Charles, but that is incorrect! They started with Fenders and later, after Nokie hooked up with Semie Mosley, converted to Mosrites and all became partners in distribution. Just look at them in their very early album covers and promotional shots and you will see the Jazzmasters. I even saw them in the later 90's and they were back playing Fenders. You might look around and find the biography on The Ventures - search Google... It's out of print but can still be found in some libraries and thru the InterLibrary Loan system.. Lots of great details and stories. KZbin has a TON of videos from over the years and all around the world - mostly Japan - that features them and their equipment plus various members, from startup to the current lineup since all the original members have passed away. Note Don's brand "Wilson Brothers" guitars (Google that, too) in later years, somewhat Mosrite like and I believe still available today!
