I have just read "The girl with the dragon tattoo". It is a good book, better than the sequel "The girl who played with fire". Was the character of Lisbeth Salander supposed to be the main character? She seems to be a complete accident. I believe that Mikael Blomkvist was supposed to be the main character and Salander just a minor, supporting character. Blomkvist is an alter ego of the author Stieg Larsson. Many characteristics of Blomkvist are based on the author himself. But then Larsson created the character of Salander, which is far more interesting than any other character he created. To a point that all sequels are now about her and not Blomkvist. Even the original title of the book in Swedish "Män som hatar kvinnor" seems to translate to "Men who hate women". Which means the book was never supposed to be about Salander. But because she is much more interesting, the titles of all books in English are now related to her. Was Larsson already expecting to write the sequels from the very beginning? The first book seems to be almost entirely self-contained. There are 3 distinct storylines in the book: Harriet Vanger, Lisbeth Salander, and Hans-Erik Wenneström. Both Vanger and Wenneström storylines are completed in the first book. But Salander storyline is expanded in the sequels. Larsson makes a brief mention of "all the evil" which he never explains in this book, planting the seeds for a sequel. The second book ends in a cliffhanger, so the third book was almost inevitable. Why did Larsson create Lisbeth Salander? I think he wanted a computer hacker, someone who could get crucial information to help the main hero of the story. That computer hacker should not only be a genius, but also be almost criminal, getting into other people's computers illegally and secretly. That is how you get an antisocial, lonely, weird, extremely intelligent, agressive, hostile, unemotional fragile little girl covered in tattoos and body piercings. Why do writers insist on adding so much useless information? Not just Larsson, but I have noticed many writers insist on describing everything in excruciating detail, information that is usually useless or completely irrelevant to the story. Do we need to know exactly what each character ate for breakfast? The writer will describe in detail each room the character enters into, exactly what each character eats for breakfast, lunch and dinner, exactly what each character wears, or doesn't wear... All this stuff just to fill pages... I suspect that many writers sign contracts with publishers, and those contracts stipulate the number of pages the book must have. So when the writer doesn't know what to write, he will simply fill pages and pages with irrelevant boilerplate, just to satisfy the quota of pages stipulated in the contracts... How to solve the problem of sexual violence against women? Even though it is the main theme of the book, the issue of violence against women is never fully addressed. The author does not propose any solutions. The question is even more serious when the crime is perpetrated by the very people who are supposed to protect the victim, like parents, family members, legal guardians. And when the victim is a minor, it makes things even more tragic. One possible solution is to have several legal guardians. The biological parents are the primary legal guardians. But we could have several other people, not necessarily family members, who could act as secondary legal guardians or adoptive parents. All the guardians have the obligation of ensuring the physical, mental and financial well-being of the child. The secondary guardians would have the right to keep the child for a few days every month, and the obligation to give a small financial contribution to the primary guardians. If the primary guardians for some reason are not able to raise the child, the child is then automatically transferred to the secondary guardians. The secondary guardians become primary guardians, while the previous primary guardians either cease to be guardians or become secondary guardians. If any of the guardians commit any kind of abuse against the child, hopefully the other guardians will be able to notice it and inform the police.
