I ask you all-..... P38 came with some BMW 2,5 diesel and never a M57!! Is it just a bolt on if you go from the little 2,5 diesel to the mighty M57!! In the P38!! How is it with using a 8HP ZF automatic gearbox on M57!! The M57 and ZF 8HP never got together in a car, not in Range Rover or BMW!! All answers will be welcomed ......

@@tompage My excuse Sir...... I thought it was with an original 2,5 diesel with a R380 or just manual and the only swapped thing was the engine to M57 from the smaller one from BMW......... Then you got it strait to me..... Thanks for that. I just wonder if anybody have made a total swap-kit to the V6 Rovers..... Let it have a real engine and keep on living. That's a challenge but I guess it would make some money !!

Hi, I have exactly the same problem, but the door is jammed shut, could you’ll explain how you got the door open. Many thanks, Don
@tompage
@tompage 25 күн бұрын
You have to lower the window and with a rod (I believe I used a stick welding rod) slide it down inside the door to the drivers door actuator and gently pull at this until you get it to pop open. Can’t remember exactly what part popped it, was just trial and error until it opened the door

@RobertFenlon-t2k you’re better off picking one up in the uk as it’s vintage it will be cheap to clear and you’ll get one in much better shape than in Ireland. I do work on P38’s for certain people, been working on them for almost 20yrs now. There’s a mountain of work in this conversion and it’s not a cheap conversion.

@tompage absolutely love it mate!. I've got an Oxford blue P38 manual, it's going on nearly quarter of a million miles now, like triggers broom but it's the nuts. I'm torn between doing what you've done as in the M57 dream, but at the same time part of me tells me to keep it original and keep it original but as you know the standard hp is in understatement. If only land rover did the sensible thing and put the M57 in it from the beginning it would have been a whole different sorry. Are you coming to any shows with it in the summer this year at any point, would love to have a proper look at it!?
@tompage
@tompage 27 күн бұрын
Honestly, although she doesn’t look it now, my P38 has roughly 420k kms on the clock so over a quarter million miles. She was in very bad shape when I bought her (if you go to the vehicles instagram page “RangeRoverP38IRL” and scroll back to the very first pictures you’ll see just how bad). I had only ever planned to tidy it up and make it reliable for long trips through Europe but the M51 was tired so although there’s a lot of work in the M57N conversion it’s definitely worth doing. We took her to the top of the arctic in March (10k kms across 13 countries in 3 weeks) and in April this year will do 17 countries down through Italy up through Albania Montenegro etc, same distance in 3 to 4 weeks and in Jan 2026 drive her from Ireland to Paris to Dakar in Africa. So with long arduous trips like these planned the M57N conversion earns back the effort and the difference in power and reliability is night and day. I’m not 100% sure about Gaydon yet but was at Billing last year and will be there again with it this year. Did the LRO show with it the year before last but prefer Billing. If you spot it come for a chat I’m always happy to answer any questions. Just to tempt you though, in my opinion the manual P38’s are the perfect donor for this conversion. Mine was also originally a 5 speed manual and now a 6 speed manual

Having owned a 2008 L322 for 5yrs with the same engine the weak spots are the plastic manifolds and the turbos. I never had issues with my turbos as I serviced it religiously. With the 3.6 TDV8 a lot of owners don’t realise that there are 2 separate oil drain plugs and if you don’t drain both when you change the oil the turbos will suffer as a result of it. If you’re gonna change all that you’d be better off pulling the engine out, it would be quicker and easier in the long run as the turbos are not fun to get out with the engine in. I’d pay attention to the condition of your manifolds and also change the thermostat housing which lives between the manifolds. Make sure to use all new copper washers when pulling the injectors also. All in all the 3.6 is a great engine in my experience

@fenflyer each to their own and I take your points, have also had many P38’s. I’ve always said that 18” is the max for a P38 without ruining the ride and 20” max for an L322 without doing likewise. I think 16’s look great on defenders and series but as a personal preference I love the 18” hurricanes for the P38. Have put this lady through her paces and she’s also running 30mil spacers with no issues, she rides lovely with the lift, spring and shock setup now that the camber has been corrected, was almost un-drivable until I sorted that out. We’ve a trip along the coast of Kerry planned in a few weeks time before prep starts for the next big trip to Sicily in April of next year.
@tompage

@fenflyer also with the gearbox I choose I needed to bring up my tire size to compensate for the difference in ratios over the original r380 box. I could have gone with 16’s and massive tires to come up to 33” but I think sticking with the original hurricanes and 285/65 looks better. Everything underneath has been replaced or upgraded including all new Timkin wheel bearings as these are a big heavy wheel with those tires on them and keeping the original 30mil spaces puts even more pressure on but I’m happy with it.
