I first (only, actually) heard the Shindell version on Acoustic Sunrise on KFOG. But I moved to the ridge above Chico in 2018, 2 weeks before the Camp fire. And have thought of the song every summer up here.

8-5-2024 75th anniversary of the Mann Gulch Fire that inspired this song. 13 smokejumpers perished when caught in a blowup of the fire in Mann Gulch. Young Men and Fire by Norman McClean is a great read and account of the fire.

Twenty years ago or so Fred was in Tampa and we had a chat after I told him how nice the people were in Canada despite that silly notion that Canada was somehow lagging behind the USA when I spent an extended time there for work and how they laughed about America being the land of free as we passed more and more restrictive laws... And don't have socialized health care... People are people is all he said after I told him how I'd heard songs up in Canada that would hit the American airwaves a good month or two later... Just Keep chanting USA, USA,USA as we head back to the dark ages...

I am helpless when I remember this song. When my mind wanders and finds the lyrics, I have to listen to it. Those poor kids. The whole blow-up was over in around 10 minutes, but the fire caught them in 30 seconds. I can’t imagine trudging alongside someone I shared a backstory with and the next thing I know it’s like they’ve been plucked from the earth. Full stop. Nothing but a shape in the grass to confirm that they had been there at all. I can’t imagine the force or the heat of that wind that blew them away. I don’t know what I’d do, knowing that there’d be nothing I could have done to prevent it from happening. 3,000 acres in ten minutes. 13 men in 30 seconds. They didn’t stand a chance.

This one really hits where it hurts. Funny how I remember things that "never happened" and friends I "never lost." It was a strange time and the Cold War wasn't nearly as cold as most people thought. We thought what we were doing would make a difference and we were proud to do it. Well, it didn't really matter in the end but nevertheless at least some of the pride remains. If you do what you believe is right, maybe a little pride is justified. Or maybe I just need to believe that.

My favorite line in this whole incredible song has got to be "Officially in Germany, officially while we trained" I'm sure most of you know, but just in case some don't, he means that in the official military records, his injuries were sustained in training in Germany. Had this not been clandestine, he would have received a medal or something. But instead, he's not even allowed to say where it happened. The war robbed him of honor and truth.

I love it too. We live in the St. Johns neighborhood of Portland Or (kind of unfortunately, the trains never stop, bringing in oil from the tar sands and grain from the midwest). Anyway, great song.
