To me the Looff horses were the most beautiful of all the carousel carvers. They all had that wild look to them and had all those beautiful jewels on them. I grew up in the Northern Bay area with 2 historic Looff carousels. The 1905 Charles I.D. Looff carousel from Whitney's Playland at the beach in San Francisco and the 1911 Looff carousel down at the SCBB. 👍🎠

Such a shame; as a young family, we used to enjoy our holidays at Hemsby and Scratby in the 70s. But, given the nature of the coast along here, along with rising sea levels@nd more savage storms due to global warming, there is no viable alternative than to let it all go. The whole of the coastline is under greater or lesser threat: nature wins every time - it's been around a lot longer than you or I!

Flip!! Seeing this damage proper upset me. I stayed in Romany, the blue chalet shown at 1:30, in the 1970s. Back then there was at least 30 metres of scrub between the road and the dunes that led to the beach. Now the lot's gone, even the place where Dad used to park his Austin Allegro has disappeared. In 2020 I went back to Hemsby for a day, exploring the old haunts. Romany was then lived in by a lovely couple from Canvey Island who, on hearing my recollections of the place, invited me in for a look around. I'll never forget the kindness they showed me on that day, even showing me my old room (now a toilet) and the old chamber-pot that we lads used for washing!! From Romany to the top end of The Marrams (the lifeboat station, Beach Road and the "moozements") was a walk of about a quarter-mile, all concrete road with yards of scrub and dunes between us and the sea. It's a shock to the system to find all that scrub, and indeed some of the chalets, "gorn". The moral of the story, I suppose, is "if those in power do nothing, those without power stand to lose everything". My heart goes out to the couple from Canvey Island, I hope you're all right and if you can't stay in Romany, hope you find somewhere at least as good.
