What more can be said about this superb rendition of Clarence Ashley's Honey Babe, with the always glorious voice of Maria Muldaur and equally glorious guitar work of Doc and Merle Watson, both of whom having now left us and in the case of Merle much, much too soon, and also with David Grisman on Mandolin, David Lynley on Lap Steel Guitar, John Kahn on Bass, and Jim Gordon on Drums. I have listened to this recording too many times to count and never get tired of it..

Another instance of an earlier Shaye who would sometimes take a hit on a joint... you don't see that in later videos. Here we have Kiowa Wells, Shaye Cohn, and Barnabus Jones sharing.

They could only afford one cigarette between them I guess. lol. Maybe Not lol!!! They started out that year known as Tuba Skinny and his Tiny Men, as it was apparently Todd on Tuba who sort of started that band that morphed into just "Tuba Skinny. After all the ladies are not men, tiny or not, and they added a, of talent and class. I bet at the time it was hard to predict what would become of this group...what a miracle it improved over time to big time success....but the talent was already there as you can hear.....and they had the undying love of music and a lot of perseverance and Moxy. God love 'em...IMO although I have no proof and don't know these people personally, it was Shaye Cohn who lead that group to success. She had the schooling and the knowledge and the personality it seems to me. She knew how to bring them together and inspire them in a subtle way. In this video she shows no signs of leading them. Later videos, if watch enough, you can see who is directing traffic. But always with a great attitude.

She certainly seems to be in charge at the end.

Maria has recently teamed up with Tuba Skinny out of New Orleans! Interesting stuff! I used to see Doc Watson at the Ashgrove in West Hollywood and I used to see Maria Muldaur there with Jim Kweskin et al.
