I can testify that Roberts's March to Kandahar was taught to British schoolboys (at least in the 1970s :) I think the march is celebrated to make up for the huge catastrophe of the First Afghan War, and the devastating defeat suffered at Maiwand that triggered the need for the march during the Second Afghan War. Britain celebrates its heroic defeats (Charge of the Light Brigade, Dunkirk, Tobruk) but ignores humiliating or stupid defeats (Yorktown, Corunna, Isandlwana, Maiwand, Dieppe, Narvik, Singapore).

A truly great rapid summary of the history of the Asian Far East. Loved the maps and the photos.

My grandfather was a volunteer and served with Britisha Army Ordnance Corps during WWI. In late 1915 he was part of the British Salonika Army, taking part in the Salonika Campaign. In 1918, as part of the British Army of Black Sea, he was shipped out to take part in the Allied intervention in the Caucasus region. At the end of the Allied intervention, back in England after being de-mobbed, he joined the great mass of men who found themselves rewarded for their WWI service with long term unemployment. In conversation he told me about the high level of discontent amongst the Allied troops in Southern Russia; in particular, he mentioned that French soldiers & sailors mutinied in the Crimea.

31:39 Never realized that America's Civil War had such a ripple effect in Europe. I thought the U.S. was considered a backwater nation until the Spanish American War.

Excellent overview. My only criticism is leaving out the role the Chornobyl disaster played in Gorbachev's decision to allow the Soviet Union to open up. He Felt the communist system was fundamentally and dangerously flawed.

Do you know when these trips might restart? For obvious reasons, western people are not currently travelling in Russia.

This clip from a lecture given to the Imperial War Museum casts more than serious doubt about trusting him as an historian. At best, he’s decimated the achievements and character of General Sir Charles Gordon purely for the fun of it. At worst? One must ask, as most lies have their use- to hide a disturbing and potentially dangerous, truth about themselves kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXu7opurqL6ag68si=r0CZh8an9D5zu7oS

The truth about Major Gordon Corrigan. A man who lies like this, cannot be relied on to tell the truth. He abused his daughter and allowed others to do so too kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXu7opurqL6ag68si=Ausy0RovmI9myLGF

Fascinating stuff...trailblazers. I wonder if these private rail experiences will offer guest lecturers in a similar way that cruise ships do?
