I've not heard this song before but I recognise the melody from the old song 'Hot Ashphalt' Well, good evening all my jolly lads, I'm glad to find you well If you'll gather all around me now, a story I will tell For I've got a situation, and begorrah and begob I can whisper I've the weekly wage of nineteen bob 'tis twelve months come October since I left my native home After helping them Killarney boys to bring the harvest down But now I wear a geansaí, around my waist a belt I'm the gaffer of the squad that makes the hot ashphalt Chorus: We laid it in the hollows and we laid it in the flat And if it doesn't last forever, sure I swear I'll eat my hat Well I wandered up and down the world but sure I've never felt Any surface that was equal to the hot asphalt The other night a copper comes, and he says to me 'Maguire, Would you kindly let me light my pipe down at your boiler fire?' He planks himself straight down in front, with hobnails up till late Here, says I, my decent man you better go and find your beat He ups and yells 'I'm down on you, I'm up to all your pranks, Don't I know you for a traitor from the Tipperary ranks?' Boys, I hit straight from the shoulder, I gave him such a belt And I knocked him into the boiler full of hot asphalt Chorus We quickly pulled him out again and threw him in the tub And with soap and warm water we began to rub and scrub But, divil the thing, it hardened and it turned him hard as stone And with every other rub sure you could hear the copper groan I'm thinking, says O'Reilly, that he's looking like Old Nick And burn me if I'm not inclined to claim him with my pick Ah now, says I, it would be easier to boil him till he melts And to stir him nice and easy in the hot asphalt Chorus You may talk about your sailor lads, ballad singers, and the rest, Your shoemakers and your tailors, but we please the ladies best The only ones who know the way their flinty hearts to melt Are the lads around the boiler making hot asphalt With rubbing and with scrubbing, sure I caught my death of cold For scientific purposes, my body it was sold In the Kelvin Grove Museum, my boys, I'm hanging in my pelt As a monument to the Irish making hot asphalt

All four of his grandparents were born in Ireland. That would make him about as Irish-American as it gets, not Ulster Scots/Scotch Irish. He's also, from my understanding, Roman Catholic, not a Calvinist.

Very cruel institution The Catholic church in all my life and i am 60 years old now have I ever meet people who where so abusive from the priests to the office workers to the parishioners. I attended this particular parish for over 10 years, I was treated like a mangy dog. I have since left the faith . I still grapple with the dark memories of being neglected, refused confession, rejected , groomed by the priest, hit on by the 80 year old parishioners, excluded from joining anything . Is that any way to treat a gentle kind woman who put her heart and soul into the religion. I am sorry I was ever confirmed into the Catholic Church. I have to live with these abuse daily, I struggle to stay alive each day the pain is so bad.

Not far from Miltown Malbay if you travel south a small way, To a place called Bonavilla in the pleasant County Clare. Where there lived a widow lonely with her one daughter only, Who stayed at home to care her while the rest were gone away. Now this poor old woman weeping and her daughter she was sleeping, Wearied from her toils, 'twas the eve of Christmas day. They got letters, they got money, they felt lonely somehow funny, And to her sleeping daughter these words she then did say: “Oh then Kate a-stór, you’re sleeping while my eyes are ever weeping, Weeping for those little ones that’s gone so far away. Won’t you read again that letter, somehow it makes me better, Each time I hear the news of them that’s in Amerikay. Oh the kitchen here was full of them and one by one the lot of them, Sailed out across that great big sea to that land so far away. And now each little motion on the wide and fretful ocean, Falls heavy on the mother’s heart this blessed Christmas Day. 'Tis well I do remember the bleak day in December, When the neighbors laid your father in his narrow bed of clay. Then I prayed God would be taken, [I prayed to God to take me], For my heart was well near breaking, Myself and all those little ones that Blessed Christmas Day. But the yellow waves were shining with their creamy deep grey lining, And they stole the children of my heart to that land so far away. First went Dick and Nelly, then little blue-eyed Willie, Oh ‘tis far ye’re from a mother’s care this Blessed Christmas Day. Next went brown haired Mary herself and Tommy Carey, Slipped down across to Father Pat before they sailed away. It was the lucky marriage, for she’s rolling in her carriage, Around the streets of Broadway this Blessed Christmas Day. And that little wild lad Davy, with the flaxy hair so wavy, He’s singing Irish songs for them tonight in old Broadway. If I was only near him, to hear the big crowds cheer him, ‘Tis a mother’s heart would swell with pride that Blessed Christmas Day. Now what’s the use in talking, Seánín was hardly walking, When I saw him climb upon the cliff and look across the bay. My bitter tears were falling, sure I knew this day was calling, The only tree around [treasure of] my heart that Blessed Christmas Day. But the yellow waves are shining and mo bhrón ‘tis I am pining, To sail upon the top o’ them to that land so far away. Won’t you read again that letter, somehow it makes me better, Each time I hear the news of them that’s in Amerikay.

Thank you Kevin Tracey. And to everyone at Setpoint Medical. And Janice. My Setpoint Medical VNS has been implanted at LLU and soon to be activated. Everyone I have encountered when progressing through the entry into the trial were gracious and humble. I am doing my best to spread the word on the new Setpoint Medical clinical trial. The sooner we have results the sooner the general public will have access to this treatment. I am hopeful that the juvenile RA patients will be the first to benefit from this treatment by being given early access. Also, after telling everyone about this treatment for RA and Crohn's, I have directed many people to the "Vegus Nerve Girl. So she can keep them updated on the Crohn's side of things. I'm confident in your and others research and made a commitment to see this through the first potion of the trial as well as the extension trial just announced Thank you again, Charlie

What a great song. The soldiers must love this leader. We need these songs now more than ever. The pandemic has allowed me to browse You Tube and find beautiful music. Perhaps General Dempsey could sing Grace - beautiful Irish song. I heard it sung for the first time by Rod Stewart and it was so beautiful. Very sad song but beautiful. Slainte, USA and Sligo

I'm thankful for this calm, precise and soulful conversation. Thankful too, that James Carroll has stayed the course and shares his insight and hope for those of us who seek to go beyond the lies and atrocities of the current iteration of the Catholic Church. It will take the courage of many James Carrolls to consistently and lovingly confront clericalism and the resulting sin that envelopes the Church. I would only add to this a call to confront the hierarchy's often seen, apparent preferential option for the wealthy.
