I'm writing this as a Turkish people and I acknowledge the genocide. It was a genocide. We have to be able to see that, like every single person or people, we are susceptible to deep darkness. Religious fanaticism destroyed a potentially beautiful friendship between the Turkish and Armenian people. Ottoman rule forgot one of the most important things that made it so powerful and just: respecting all peoples equally. Initially, the empire was a multicultural, multireligious state where different ethnic groups lived harmoniously under the millet system. Non-Muslim communities like Armenians were treated with respect and granted the freedom to govern their own affairs. Muslims, Jews, and Christians were neighbors, attending each other's wedding ceremonies and coexisting peacefully. However, as Islamic fundamentalists gained power, the empire increasingly became an Islamic state rather than a Turkish one (not Turkish in ethnicity, but in nationality). Today, many ethnicities reside under the same banner in Turkey, and this harmony could have continued with non-Muslim locals if not for the rise of religious extremism in Ottoman Empire's decline years. A multicultural state is powerful, but it is also vulnerable to discord sown by ill-intentioned agents directed by other empires that seek to destroy it. I don't know if I'll ever see Turkish and Armenian people being friends again in my lifetime, but I sure hope it happens sooner rather than never. If it were to happen, it would undoubtedly begin with acknowledging the atrocities that were committed. I've seen Greek and Turkish people start to like each other more and more in recent decades, so I have hope that it can happen with Turkish and Armenian people as well.

What happened to Armenians was not a genocide. It was a reciprocal massacare between the Turkish locals and Armenian locals ft. Turkish army and Dashnaks, during forced migration of Armenian population (only at the Eastern Turkey, those in the west remained where they are) to the camps in Syria. Using the word “Genocide” this loosely helps nothing but exculpating German holocaust .
