Nice discussion I believe we must do the two: scholarly and lay; and everything in between. Christians should learn to love God with the minds and stretch a lil more...but we shouldn't peg the glory in the sophistication or not. People who say they want it just "simple" aren't ready to hear Jesus, because he was a complex and yet simple rhetorian and dense poetic narrative which were challenging... We know that even his direct audience (including the disciples didn't immediately understand them some times) and he explained. We MUST do both, and everything in between

Thank you for your insights on this area. This is what we want - to share the love and passion of God with those we are in community with!

Not many Christians are interested today in what John Calvin wrote centuries ago: "Without knowledge of God there is no knowledge of self." (Institutes I, Chap 1, #2) In a day where knowing and understand one's own identity is considered highly desirable, the ancient words remain true. You have reworded this thought in modern phraseology so that it rings true to modern ears.Interestingly, the above truism follows Calvin's first point: "Without knowledge of self there is no knowledge of God." He sees the two points so intricately entwined that he finds it difficult to determine which precedes the other. You have put

Why God says your standing place is holy?!

Good question! Because Moses is standing in the presence of God. Wherever God is is holy!

Justice and mercy are at odds. it took God to overrule the law that condemned. That's fine for God to do so, but while we all like to be forgiven, we're not easily gracious toward others and their transgressions.. So how would you say justice and mercy work together in any practical way for us?

Excited to hear this. Honestly, as I have studied Philemon more deeply, I have gotten more discouraged. Seems like Paul wasn't as revolutionary in his communication with Philemon as I once thought. Would love to be wrong though!

Hebrew sedaqa and saddiq do not mean the same as in English 'justice' and 'just'. Justice in hebrew is shaphat, not sedaqa!

Spot on, Dr McCaulley! I tell my narrative through my sufferings of becoming a widow with four children in a foreign land - without family. People listen because I can so vividly describe God's presence during that suffering and through to the other end. This will be an enriching class and hopefully as thought provoking as the one you did with Dr Wright. Thank you for being you!

I am looking forward to it. I have read only Romans all year. When I finish one translation, I start another. Quite possibly, aside from Revelation, the most misunderstood book in Scripture.
