I've not made anything out of clay since my school years 😂 so I grabbed myself some DAS clay, got mad at how it dries all over my fingers but managed to make a dragon head. I then decided to sculpt the rest of the body and well its fine, not as good as my standards go, but it's fine. Getting super sculpty now. I qlso tried some cheap clay that says its like china clay, it wasn't too bad but it would not harden right. Saying that I may try it again.

Great video. Monster clay is my go to…I like NSP too, but monster is amazing to work with. Only issue is molding is not an easy thing to do to make a permanent sculpture or reproduce. It’s expensive and an art form in and of itself, so I pretty much have switched to polymer…the next best thing for permanency. My sculpts have alot of detail, so making molds is not for me at this time 😥

Super informative thank you! Seeing this I wonder why the soft or even medium version exist, right? I mean if you can soften it for molding, don’t you want your shape to hold as much as possible once you’re done shaping? And then if you want to make any modifications you just soften it up again with heat. So it seems like getting the hard version is a no-brainer. Or am I missing something?

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. Soft and medium can be use for people with arthritis a lot easier. Also if you want to "quick sketch" and idea you can work the soft a lot faster. And to be honest its all personal preference . Hope the video helped.

Late to the party here (by 3 years) . I have used all these materials and oddly I have been using DAS to sculpt mummy busts. It works really well because I don’t need or want super detail and tearing actually helps with the dried/rotten appearance of old Egyptian mummy busts. Fun to use and very light

For projects that take a long time, you need to cover the Chavant to keep the dust off due to its tackiness. A Monster Clay project is not tacky and you can rinse the dust off in your sink.

I do sand sculpting as a hobby and want to practice my skills while not at the beach. Would clay work help me? At the beach we just build up forms, pound the wet sand in and remove everything we don't want. So it's a bit different than clay in that you can just take a little piece add it where you want. Sand doesn't rebond like that. Maybe I could use Monster clay, pour it into a small form and start from that. How easy is it to remove large chunks of clay?
@mattiecreates
@mattiecreates 11 ай бұрын
fundamentally it is similar but sand has a completely different texture. and the huge nice sand sculptures you see the professionals do is a special mix of sand and clay that has a specific moisture content. I bet if you youtube sand sculpting recipe there is something. if you like sculpting in general id pick up clay of some kinda and just have fun playing around making stuff

So I want permanent sculptures-If monster won’t work, sculpey won’t work for me, what should I try? Nsp isn’t really permanent, so is das my only option? Are there any other options? Is there any way at all to make monster permanent? I’d like to try silicone molds, but my sculptures might be big and I can’t buy very much silicone- what do I do?

So i never tried hard monster clay. but i did use hard NSP. If you like the idea of carving away and refining that way, its not a bad choice but i think for 99% of people Medium is fine cause it does get as hard as a candle when it cools down, which allows you to carve in fine details. Thanks for the kind words and support. Have fun sculpting!!

I recently got chavant clay and it's so damn sticky, I found heating it for 15 second bursts in the microwave on some baking parchment also works Only way I've found to clean it off my hands is using vegetable oil and dish soap, otherwise the residue is impossible to get off I'm debating getting some monster clay because I've heard it's easier to work with, hence why I'm here haha I'm using it to make sculpts to make molds or foam patterns from it
@mattiecreates

i dont recommend heating in the microwave for chavant only monster clay, use a crock pot or a heat lamp above it and let it slowly melt. or a very very low setting in the oven, chavant is very waxy and oily it is sticky when warm but once it hardens more it carves alot easier. i also use chanvant hard or medium. monster clay is alot less sticky than chavant and similar characteristics. i think i will do a video on a how to build a hot box.

I know you mentioned that an armature isn't needed for the monster clay but would that be for any size sculptures? Like could you sculpt a adult body from size from the waist up?
@mattiecreates

Maybe with the hard mo ster clay as it gets pretty firm but at that scale it would just be a waste of clay. And would be very heavy. Anything big scale I would always recommend and armature.
