I come back to this every year or so, just absolutely slays me! What a groove & what a wild ride, just soooo intense!🔥🔥🔥 Love Nate Smith tearin' it up, Mark Guiliana rips on this too on another live version, some absolutely wicked juju going on here❤

Incredible chemistry in the whole band, trippy Jason Lindner intro and layers, insane Donny McCaslin solo and Nate Wood/Mark Guiliana so tight, its' like they are one mind w/ 2 bodies.

Seems like so long ago. Best times of my life seeing music in NYC was at these shows. Maybe I saw the 55 Bar shows six times or so? Not sure if Bowie was ever in there with me. Around the same time, I saw Maria Schneider at Birdland and he was there. Right after Black Star's release, I had tickets for McCaslin's group at Vanguard. They did a week there once a year for a while, never missed it. Anyway, Bowie passed shortly before the Vanguard shows. What a somber week. I think I saw a set every night. They did Small Plot of Land and Warszawa in addition to some Black Star and McCaslin tunes. Always wondered if Bowie would have sung a little at some of those sets if he'd been in good health. The timing seemed to make sense.

The girl in the front next to the drummer has her hands over her ears during the whole tune. Finally when the tune ends, she takes her hands off her ears and then starts clapping. Go figure.

This is amazing. Mark's drumming up to 4:15 is so inventive, but when everyone joins in after that points, things start to swing AND cook! I just wish the bass were a little stronger in the mix.

I went tp see this group at the Village Vanguard and was like...Nate Wood? I was kinda bummed. Then he played and him and Mark did magic and spent the rest of the night picking my jaw off the floor. It was one of the best musical experiences I have ever heard.

A bit reminiscent of some of the M-BASE ethos, free and funky, yet hard hitting. There's a Gary Thomas track called' By Any Means Necessary' that a kinda vibe not totally unlike this, but has keys and guitar, upright instead of electric bass and one drummer instead of 2.

I ate at a little Korean joint that was right next to the Blue Whale, and had no idea at the time that it was the type of venue that Mark Guiliana had played. There was nobody in there at the time, but I remember the blue lights. The place is tucked into a corner of a balcony of a little shopping center.
