Thanks for showing the weaving. I was making it a lot harder in my head than it needs to be, thinking I had to weave in special spaces like on the premade backings.
@PaivatarАй бұрын
When you weave the rya on the loom, you have much more flexibility to choose the sett, how many strands to use for each knot, the length and the spacing of the weft threads. You can use different thickness or types of yarn, some fingering, some DK weight, some handspun, longer or shorter lengths of yarn in different sections, to create more 3 dimensional effects. A Rya is a perfect way to use up odd bits from your stash.

What a wonderful expression - 'digging a well with a needle! I have done many nalbinding videos over the past several years. Not in any order. I suggest you watch them and you will catch on. Start by making a very long chain stitch. Do about 200 stitches.. don;t look at the chain much because it will look very messy to start with. Your hands need to learn how to work with the needle and yarn.
@Paivatar3 ай бұрын
The chain can be used later as a strap - or part of it can. The messy beginning section can be cut off. I will be making more videos soon to explain the process further.

I’ve just been learning and practicing Finnish 2+2 stitch. I don’t understand how to increase this stitch. Would you be able to show that up close? I’d like to see going from the first row to the next row.
@Paivatar3 ай бұрын
Going from the first row to the second row - Nalbinding is usually worked in a circle, so you naturally go from the first row to the second as you work along in the circle. After the circle is complete, it is possible to cut the nalbinding to open it up. Nalbinding doesn't unravel. But I think you then need to work a row of stiches around the outside edge to make a smoother finish. I haven't tried that yet. There is a way to do flat pieces as well. When you turn the work, I think you need to add an extra stitch into the last stitch, before you turn it around. I have been doing some experiments on this but haven't quite figured that out yet. The piece is shrinking in size, so may need to add another stitch before turning. To increase a stitch, pick up another stitch in the same loop as the previous one - just like in crochet.

I’d love to make a market bag. I’m still struggling with the stitches and getting an even look.
@Paivatar3 ай бұрын
Oh a market bag is a good idea! I wouldn't worry about uneven or 'perfect' stitches. Nalbinding is very forgiving not like knitting. The stitches all interconnect several times depending on which stitch you are using and will not come apart. Nalbinding is not easy to unravel so just keep going. You are building muscle memory. After some time, your hands will know what to do. My Sami grandmother did her 'thumb knitting' all winter long - stitching in a small dark turf hut, with the light of seal lamp. Just keep needling and enjoy the simple rhythm of the needle, the wool and your hand movements.

Hello. Thanks for a nice video about nålebinding. I learned that we had to spit on the of the yarnends, and felt them together, then it became the way they did it in the Middle Ages. The yarn didn't get so bulky then.
@Paivatar4 ай бұрын
Yes, that's a good idea. Sometimes I do that but mostly I don't bother - when it's my slightly bumpy hand spun single ply the lumps tend to blend in after awhile. The wool hat also felts a bit with use and with washing. With a plied yarn I think the joins are more noticeable.

I wondered How to get the oslo stitch tight with my big thumbs. I am so happy I found this video! Thank ypu for sharing!
@Paivatar5 ай бұрын
Hi. You can tighten the stitch by pulling your thumb out and then gently giving the stitch a bit of a tug before you start the next one. You can also use the needle as a size gauge by using this method. Pull out your thumb, and tug on the yarn that is still on the needle. When it's the right size then pull the needle out. Hope this makes sense. I will try to demonstrate this in another video soon.

My roomate told me his male cat (that actually looks just like your cat) befriended a skunk the other day. He saw it rubbing up on the skunk and luckily the skunk didnt seem to mind and didnt spray him. But a week prior he was not so lucky and came home smelling like skunk. He had been sprayed. But the fact that his cat is trying to befriend skunks got me wondering if anyone had any videos of such a thing. Thats how i came across your video. Funny that your cat happens to look just like our cat. Also baby skunks are so adorable with their moms❤ ive never seen a momma skunk walking backwards with her babies like that (assuming that was the mom). She looks like shes prepared to spray anything that comes their way.

I have some of hers but haven't had time to work with them yet.. too many projects I'm working on. But give hers a try. The height is about the same as what I was using so will work on an inkle loom.

And now I’m encouraged and I’m off to order my heddles. I have a beautiful Bone “ sword“ shuttle that my husband gave me for my birthday several years ago.
@Paivatar5 ай бұрын
I don't think you need heddles if you are using this type of loom, as the slots and holes act like the heddles. This loom can be used on an inkle loom or the far ends of the warp can be tied around anything - like a tree, a fence post, the back of a chair or a door handle. The warp ends close to you can be tied to your waist. Sometimes I prefer to wrap the warp around the inkle loom because I find it easier on my back than to use my body for tensioning. The bone sword shuttle sounds lovely!

@Paivatar6 ай бұрын
I did make some round start hats some time ago. I usually like to work them from bottom up, if I am making the hat to a certain size. I don't really like pointy toe socks so I thought I would try making this by starting with a short chain - 8 stitches. This one was my first attempt and I thought it turned out ok. The heel fitting needs a bit of adjustment. I will make another pair soon and write down a pattern for it.
@MaxxSmiledog.jpg19986 ай бұрын

Could you tell me how many warp threads per inch are set up on your loom?
@Paivatar11 ай бұрын
Hi Miranda - it really depends on what size warp threads I am using and the thickness of rya yarn I am using. I use linen yarn for warp and the supply that I am able to get changes all the time. Sometimes all I can purchase is very fine linen yarn so I double it up. I warp the reed at 2 ends per dent, skip 1 dent. The rya knot yarn varies too. Sometimes it is a fine sock weight, sometimes a sport, sometimes a DK. If you are designing your own rya, you will need to test a few different yarn knots to see what works best with your sett.
