The instructors at JKA headquarters in Japan were quite surprised, so was - this kata performance is not what JKA recommends! They suggest the viewers checking the JKA webpage, to compare performances and make sure, which you want to follow... Sorry to say this but this guy and his instructor would never win any serious Shotokan kata Championships (at least not in Japan!)! So stiff performance and surprisingly limited hip movement! Hips during mawashi geri aren`t supposed to be DOWN but UP! ... Wow! (I`m 6th dan, 35 years of karate under Asai and Kagawa sensei in Japan). No wonder so many Japanese instructors disregard foreigners practicing shotokan due to the lack of proper guidance from the Japanese Honbu Dojo ... Anyway - Apologies to anyone offended...

Probably no one does better Unsu than sensei Yahara besides late sensei Nakayama . I never watched sensei Nishiyama’s version of unsu but could be awesomely good too. Late sensei Kanazawa and healthy sensei kagawa are also good be still not close to sensei Yahara’s 80’s version. However, this is one of the most demanding kata in shotokan, anyone before mastered every technique should not attempt to practice it. Teaching them at this level is a joke. Old people shouldn’t practice this, young people shouldn’t too. This is a kata for people who are at their prime physic with matured skill.
