I was a guard in a prison hospital (yes it was a hospital that was also a prison not a prison infirmary) For almost 10 years.

I am thinking of applying for a job in corrections. My only concern is med pass. I tried LTC and found it stressful because residents didnt have identifiers on them. If you didnt know who was who you had to rely on staff if the resident wasn't oriented. I had to work so slow and triple check in LTC. What safety measures do you have in place to ensure inmates get the correct meds?

My mom was a L.P.N for many many years. She is an "old school" nurse. VERY hands on. To her, bedside manner is just as important as the medicine you take. When she went to work at Lowel women's Correctional facility in Florida, she had to learn how to be a nurse, without touching the inmate. The inmates LOVED my mother, but the doctors and nurses HATED her. She was a big advocate for the prisoners, because she DID NOT like the way the prisoners were treated. She worked there for almost ten years before she was forced out because she actually cared about the prisoners and their rights. She ended her nursing carreer working end of life care at Hospice. The hardest thing my mom had to deal with at the prison, was not being allowed to touch her patients. As I said, my mom was very hands on. If she cant rub your back, or just touch on you, its like torture for her.😂 If everyone had a mother like mine, there wouldn't be a need for prisons...I was so so lucky to get her as a mom and if I was sick, I would want her as my nurse...❤❤❤

You need to have an advantage over other applicants. If you don’t have the experience maybe try obtaining OR specific certificates

At the end of the day, it’s just not the job for you. There are a lot of really good nurses who enjoyed their job and I’ve been doing it for decades. If it’s not for you it’s not for you.

As a new grad, I'm very interested in this kind of job. It's a different side of nursing that you don't see everyday. However, being a new grad also comes with a lot of questions regarding this setting. 1. Do correctional facilities offer additional training or orientation? 2. Is there any teamwork or do you tend to work by yourself? I know some long-term care new grad nurses that had to work by themselves on the unit and didn't have anyone to go to when they had questions. 3. I heard some facilities have an infirmary, what are the nurses duties in that setting? 4. And if there's no infirmary, where are you usually stationed at to do your work? 5. How many patients do you usually have per shift? 6. What's the difference between jail, prison, etc? 7. Who usually does the initial assessments when there's a new detainee or inmate? Provider, RN, LPN? Thank you in advance to whoever can answer my questions...and pardon me for more questions to come (I'm really curious and interested) 😅

They lie to new nurses all of the time and they end up being miserable or stuck. Its sad. Always go for what you want especially if theres a residency for it. Bedside will run and wear you down very quickly. The way that being anxious and not feeling your best is normalized is NOT normal. The human body is not meant to be an anxious state like that on a daily basis. Screw thag. Good for you for standing up for yourself and recognizing when it eas time to leave. Many people stay stuck.
