I would just like to add that the Portuguese empire also had their conquistadores, but unlike the Spanish, they operated in Southeast Asia. And there is a fantasy series called The Nessantico Cycle that is quite underrated, where there is a somewhat opposite scenario, with a people reminiscent of pre-Columbians who have their own form of magic and gunpowder invading a continent that resembles Western Europe which also has magic, but instead of gunpowder only has plate armor.

The 1965 edition is the only edition I've ever read, circa 1970. They were my father's. Have the cool feature that the front covers form a single picture. Still have them, but they are a bit worse for wear.

16:00 I’m so glad you say this… I’m looking at buying a nice copy of LOTR and the hobbit but aren’t completely satisfied with the deluxe illustrated single editions. This Alan Lee set sits at the top of my wishlist with stoicism.

Never understood tolkien book collectors, especially if you end up with a shelf of the same books many times over. Have to admit though, its a beautiful shelf, plus you could reread the stories for years, each time with a different book!

I honestly don't understand the appeal of collecting multiple editions of the same book. I have two copies of LOTR: one for reading and the recent "illustrated by the author" deluxe edition which I have just because it's nice and for quick reference.

Did you really not mention what happens in the epilogue? That's one of the most consequential events from the whole book.

I have the second set you show. I'm actually really partial to an OLD paperback. For some reason, it just feels to me like the best way to read any book. Love the covers on those as well. Modern mass market paperbacks seem to often be of lower quality, so not into that, for sure.
