Hello, My pup is the exact same age as your Tina, but she is a bullet! Did your dog chase around for a while before you filmed? She is so calm and steady! We have been dabbling a bit outside in an open large field, but things get very chaotic and out of hand in a hurry. I do not have a round pen or pen like yours, but I do have a section of my barn for the sheep that is 70 feet long and about 25 to 30 feet wide. I just sold my lambs, so I have eight ewes at this time. Do you think it might be a good idea to just let her work them in that area and let her just run around wild for a bit with the expectation that she will calm down in a little while? She does not try to bite the sheep, and while outside, she did kind of go around them until they split up. I appreciate any advice! Thank you!

This is just how Tina is from the start. They are all different, there are videos of her brother Billy on here too and he is much pushier and more excited. Letting your pup chase will not create good habits, you need to go to a smaller space where you can keep things controlled or go to someone who can help you.

When working cattle and sheep It's always important to keep your dogs out of your way. Place for them is right behind you on the right or left side. When a dog is taught to come directly to the front of you they are always in the way when you're working cattle and sheep in a pen. Especially when you add a horse to the equation you never want the dog coming up to the front of you or your horse once again it will always get in the way.
@NicoleRhodesStockdogs Жыл бұрын
I’ve never found that to be the case and you’ll find it difficult to teach a proper shed if the dog won’t come directly to you. It’s not like the dog is just going to stand/walk in front of you after you recall it while you go back to working stock lol I’m not sure what you’re imagining here.
@Crackthewhip Жыл бұрын
Hey if it works for you that's great but training a dog is one thing and putting it in a practical working environment where things are not always perfect you never want your dog in front of your horse you never want your dog in front of your walking Zone you never want your dog in front of you you always want your dog sitting out from beside you or behind you you always want your dog sit out from beside the horse or behind your horse so training dogs is one thing working cattle and sheep and a practical environment it's totally different but hey that's what's working for you

Just my two cents here, but youre both right. I train mine to come in straight to me, but then go to my side. I'll slap which leg i want them to go to if i know im going to want them to go left or right first.

Hey! I see you move your foot out to keep them away from you. Is that for personal boundaries? Do you not use names for recall? I am so new to this but I want to be able to train start to finish.

I see now. My fault. But the moving the foot out when he was running at the begining.

Really appreciated seeing her 4th work. Just had my 1yr old on her 3rd work on sheep. I feel like we are at the same point although I've been saying the flanking commands as we have circled. For the first time I've got mine downing on balance, as opposed to What feels like chasing her around the sheep. Kinda like you letting her come on to the sheep and walk them up to you...Curious if you have a step by step list for the next 30 days or so?

I really appreciate seeing the earliest days of training. Brings me hope! Ive got a BC mix just turned two who rocks at agility but Did a lot of the biting when he had his first herding lesson at 9 months…. Was hoping with age he’d mellow out enough to listen vrs hunt.
