Hello 👋🏿 I'm curious but what exactly does Maiyan mean and what are the origins of that in your culture?

It's a ceremony right before the wedding day where friends/families rub turmeric paste on the bride/groom's skin! It's said to clean the skin and create a glow :)

Question -- At what level of cousin-marriage is the risk of genetic disorders considered too great? Assuming neither party has any known disorders, both parties have an outcross parent from outside the common culture, etc.
@amanovershares
@amanovershares Ай бұрын
Too great is a relative term. Studies show that first cousins (3rd degree relatives) have double the general population risk of congenital issues (from 3% to 6%). This means the majority of couples have healthy babies. If you’re concerned about this risk, expanded carrier screening is a great tool.

Is it possible to have more flexible schedule hours such as 3 12 hour shifts a week?
@amanovershares
@amanovershares Ай бұрын
It depends on where you work. If it's within a patient-facing clinic, they will likely have M-F business hours. I'm sure there are roles out there that do evening/weekend work but I don't know about longer shifts!

Hi, can you provide some further clairty on the type of masters you should have? Does a masters in human genetics qualify graduates for the Genetic Counseling certification? Or do I have to get my masters in Genetic Counseling?

The name of the degree/program might differ but it needs to be accredited in order for you to eligible to write the board exams. The official list can be found on this website: www.gceducation.org/students-volunteers/#program

Hey Aman,i am 26 now and willing to apply for msc in genetic counseling from 🇺🇸 University so I wanted to ask will my age be a problem or does my age reduces the chances of acceptance from universities like Boston or other prestigious College? as I'm gonna apply through scholarships as I can't afford the full course ❤ from hyderabad

Age should not a problem in this field! For many people, GC is a 2nd career. A lot of people also have to take time in between undergrad and graduate school to become a more competitive applicant :)

Does your work schedule include clinical notes? Just curious
@amanovershares

Great question - this depends on the structure of your clinic. Some clinics will provide GCs with "admin days" and others allow you to create your own flexible schedule.

What are the work hours? I see that you can work from home which is good. I hear that genetic counselors normally work 40 hours but what are the time that you go in and go home or when you get done with work?

Hii, thanks for all the helpful genetic counseling videos! I commented this before and I was wondering, how do you deal with any patients that have emotional breakdowns whilst receiving any bad news? I would love to become a genetic counselor some day, but I feel like this would be a hard thing for me personally to do, and I don’t know how I could comfort the patient properly and in a professional manner. Again, thanks for the amazing genetic counseling videos!
