I'm Brazilian and I would like to understand more about the role of mellos in American bands. Here in Brazil, high notes are written for euphonium, but as they are counterpoint they are not long notes at the top, in my opinion it seems that the mellos are a timbre complement for the trumpets. it is?
@MBobo-qs5cl
@MBobo-qs5cl 2 жыл бұрын
Yes in some arrangements mellos are used that way for timbre and support. Baritones and mellos are really multi verse instruments. Some arrangers use them for doubling purposes and others for counterparts to help fill out the arrangements. They are also used as transition pieces like a mesh point for the melody going from say alto to soprano with out breaking phrasing too much. Sometimes a song doesn't offer much so instead of getting wildly creative with counterparts alot of arrangers double these instruments with the melody to add extra power. Theoretically it's a matter of the arrangers interpretation using new age music theory sprinkled with classical concepts. Also earlier concepts for baritone play had them double with bassline, counter or double with trombones. Mellos where balance in between trombone part adaptation and counterparts. As the experimenting of range increased it pushed them into soprano register. I think the thing to keep in to consideration is to not cross voicing but it happens quite often. Might no be theoretically correct classically but it sounds good in the hbcu spectrum. You will still see se bands in hbcu follow the classic theory practices like Famu, Bethune Cookman,Norfolk, NCAT...that's to name a few. Hope that helped some

@@MBobo-qs5cl Thank you very much it helped me a lot. Here in Brazil, French horns are used. Sometimes I wrote these effects for the baritone or even the euphonium, but I almost killed the musicians because of the height hahaha. In 2003 we pirated the film drumline here, it became a fever in bands all over the country. This is the best marching band style they've ever invented.

traditionally, the mellophone is used as a marching version of the french horn which plays notes from a wide variety of ranges from the trombone/euphonium ranges to the trumpet range

Mellos sound good. Would be so much better if they were in tune, hit their note spot on instead of searching for the partial, and if 1 or 2 people have the right fingerings for the higher notes such as the double F.
