You were on the NORWEGIAN SEA, we sailed on her when she was the SEAWARD. Nice to see either the CROWN or REGAL PRINCESS departing at your next port with the SEABREEZE from Premier Cruise Line there, she was a Costa Cruise Line ship FEDERICO C.

I am sure I was there when you were building it, I was just a kid back then and we lived next door to your shop, I was friends with your son. I remember he had a little Honda motor bike we would ride that thing all over the place, if I'm right and this was you, and this was the clover field airport then you took me up in my very first plane ride in the old skyking, if this is you please respond.

No, I was single and did not have a Skyking. I rented a Cesna 150 and 172 at my place on County Road 130. Then finished the BD-5 and flew it until the test engine crankshaft cracked.

Wanted a BD-5 when I saw the jet version featured in a 70’s issue of Flying magazine. Didn’t get one and I’ve only seen 2. One in a museum and the other hanging from the ceiling of a surplus shop. Tried to buy it but they wouldn’t sell it. I’d love to see one in flight.

Hi! Currently building one. Would love to connect with you. Any way possible?

Very cool. I always wanted a BD-5, but I'm afraid of heights.

What did you ever decide to do with it? I bet it could be made to fly, especially if it was lengthened slightly fo5r easy control.
@sighsoflife2 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping to find a solution soon, in part from feedback. It was very easy to control and fly. Stretching provides a larger engine compartment capacity to allow a selection of engines available to fit. I always figured the redesigned Xenoah 65hp 3 cylinder engine would become available, but I lost touch with all progress after my own original stock Xenoah failed due to the undersize crank shaft.

@@sighsoflife the problem with breaking crankshafts has to due with the drive shafts torsional resonant frequency in conjunction with the rotating mass that is the propeller. I suspect you could install a Rotax 2-stroke of appropriate power/weight and dimensions. But you must drive it with a better engineered reduction unit: (Rotax supplied), and improved drive shaft. Someone such as EPI engineering could possibly design a solution for you. It wont be cheap but it could be the golden ticket for all those owners without motors and the orphan kits out there.

I was so crazy about the BD-5 back in the 1970's, but never got one. At a sportsman show in Phoenix, about 1973, the N501BD was there, and I got to sit in it! Another time, at an airshow outside of Phoenix, Bobby Bishop flew the jet version, he sure was a funny guy and a real showman. Thank you for sharing your Super 8 movie. Crazy to think that our hand held smartphones take superior videos now days. Best of luck to you Sir. Mike in Oregon
