Any chance you could expound on the autofocus in a photography/stills aspect? I’m thinking of upgrading from a canon 70D to the X-H1, and am curious about the autofocus. I’ve always heard Fuji is behind the times on it, but worse than Sony isn’t necessarily bad or unusable. But I really like the other aspects of the X-H1, the style of the camera, film simulations, and manual assist features for vintage lenses. If it’s not perfect I can manage that considering I’m using something over a decade old with 19 AF points and no face detect. But I would like something that’s a reasonable upgrade too. Thank you :)

@DonTinsley 7 күн бұрын
Yes I can! X-H1 autofocus for photography is great, although it struggles in video. But with the right settings you can get it to work. Best autofocus mode to use on the X-H1, or any fujifilm for that matter, is zone focus. Have you upgraded? Or are you still looking?

I did today actually now I'm just waiting for it to arrive but I got a X-T4 for what is a pretty good price looking at the used market average for a like new camera. Hopefully it's as advertised. Wanted the vintage style/dials(I am admittedly a sucker for the silver body) with the better battery life, and hopefully better autofocus. Though ironically I'm gonna be using my old pentax manual lenses for a while on account of how expensive X mount lenses are. Though I've been looking at some of the budget lenses too.

I’ve been a paid photographer for 16 years, I shoot both Nikon d500 aps-c and Nikon d850 full frame. I use aps-c for real estate, youth school sports and yearbook portraits along with personal pleasure. I use full frame for weddings, corporate events, large formal celebrations with designated backdrops. BUT ……. everything I shoot can be easily handled with apps-c. It’s smaller in size, it lighter in weight, it costs less to purchase and it produces more than adequate images. With full frame glass on my d500 beautiful sharp images are created. I don’t really need 45 mp for paid work, 21 mp bodies are good enough. Heck, I might sell my d850’s, keep some of the full frame lenses to go along with my apps-c glass, that way I can handle anything that comes my way.

Just 1 question, in 2024: why this camera? It's AF can be quite frustrating at times and the sensor -- while it is OK has let me down under some specific situations that newer sensors have fixed. In general I think the X-T3 makes a lot of improvements all around except the grip and top-plate screen, and of course lack of IBIS. I do still use mine occasionally, next to my newer Fuji cameras, but I'm just curious.
@DonTinsley
@DonTinsley 24 күн бұрын
That is a great question. Basic answer: it is a highly capable camera that shines when using it for what I currently shoot. I use it for professional work and personal work. It has failed me plenty of times, but it has succeeded far much more than it failed. I understand the limitations of the camera that impact how I shoot, so I push it as far as I can without expecting it be what it is not. Great camera in 2024, and I will continue to run with it in 2025.

@@DonTinsley That, I think, is a great answer. I continue to wonder, now that I have an X-H2s for when I need better AF, is the X-H1 or the X-T3 a better camera as second body?

Distractions…interesting subject. I can relate. Back in February, i rekindled my faith in Christ and began reading the good book daily. Don’t know what happened but, a profound clarity began speaking out from the words. Joined a Church here in Japan and look forward to my daily (eye-opening ) readings. The interesting thing about retirement (67) is I now have time to do the things I couldn’t do my prior 41 1/2 years. Now I cram so much into my day craving learning something new. Language, writing, reading. My advice is…. You start a career one day and the next thing you know is it sails by too quickly. I mean in a flash! Then you get to a time in your life when you say…. I WISH i had done this or that. Satisfy your mind and soul. Find someone to share life with that gives your heart that constant smile and ahhhhhhhh! We never know what tomorrow brings. I firmly believe “he”has a purpose for us all and we need to follow it. After I lost my wife of 25 1/2 years to cancer….i thought my life was over. But one day paths cross in extremely unusual ways…. then you find someone and end up living in Japan. Meeting new people, experiencing new things and seeking that fulfillment that will reveal what my next thing in life will impact others. I feel it every day. Follow it!

@DonTinsley
@DonTinsley 3 ай бұрын
Thank you! If price isn’t a factor then my advice would be to start with what you want to experience. I’ve not used these cameras, but here’s my thought process for if I were to consider these two. X100VI is a fixed lens, rangefinder body, a little more compact and has a fixed lens, so you are committed to that one body/lens comb. Unless you invest in the lens attachments which would be another $900 - $1200 for all three to replicate different focal lengths. XT5 is interchangeable, body is a bit bigger, more megapixels (however 26 megapixels are enough for what most people need in a camera for). I mostly shoot portraits, real estate, and events. I shoot photo and video and I need the camera to be versatile. I don’t mind having a bigger body beside I generally rig out every camera I own unless it is a photo designated camera. Both camera shoot both photo and video so that’s not an issue. It all goes back to experience. Are you mainly shooting photo?

Then, recently, a Sony A6000. Loved your list of the cameras you want. How fun! I maybe should look at a list like that. Phone can be helpful at times, but if I know I can take the camera, I’m taking the camera! I’d take the point and shoot any day! My list has been pretty consistent, and if and when I’m out there looking for used gear I keep an eye out for the right price. The Nikon D60 paved the way for great cameras. The X-T5 is a great camera. Likely to compete with and/or outperform anything for the next 5-10 years. Haven’t had the privilege to use, but anything Fuji create captured gold. What’s your go to film simulation with the XT5?

I am a professional photographer and use cameras mainly for photography, not video. I would not say that the X-H1 is an entry-level camera, but it is a very good camera for professional users! For beginners there are two drawbacks. Firstly, the camera is quite large and heavy compared to other APSC cameras (such as the X-E3/4 or Sony Alpha 6000 series), so I would recommend a smaller camera for beginners to take on trips. Secondly, the camera has quite complex functions and settings, which are perfect for manual configuration, but may be too complex for beginners. A disadvantage of the camera is the limited battery life, but changing the battery is quick. Secondly, the camera's suitability for video, as it is mainly intended for photography and there are better alternatives for video. I do not understand why most tests focus on the camera's video capabilities. For video I need a completely different setup and lenses than for photography.
@DonTinsley
@DonTinsley 3 ай бұрын
Agreed. Some fair points. Thank you for commenting. The X-H1 is a pro level camera, and can be intimidating to some user. However, I’ve put the X-H1 in the hands of first time shooters and they loved the experience. Of course I dialed in the setting, whether it was full auto, semi auto, or full manual. With a quick rundown of why I set chose the settings, explaining ISO, shutter speed, exposure compensation, and f-stop they felt at home with the camera. Loved the camarera size especially the grip. They did not like the X100f too much because of the size. Of course an entry level camera would be great, but I’d still have to do the same thing with that camera when putting it in the hands of a beginner. Explains the setting and why I set it up that way. Answer any question they have until they feel comfortable enough to explore and experiment. I think the video capabilities of the X-H1 are great based on use case. Battery life is horrendous, but manageable with a few batteries. The recommendations in your comment are great starting points for 90 - 95 percent of users! Id start out with the X-E3/4, or the XS10/20 because you get the compact size, plus the grip. Thank you for sharing this! This was awesome!

@@DonTinsley I think a big benefit of all Fuji Cameras is the very versatile in camera development for *.jpg images. On my Sony cameras I only work with *.raw files I have to develop. With Fuji, it's often possible to get a very fine image look from *.jpg out of camera. This is also a big deal for beginners to get good results without the need for further processing.

Thank you! Here are a two of the channels I’ve been watching to learn more about color grading and color management. Waqas Qasi and Darren Mostyn. There are a ton of channels out there where you can get free information. Although it isn’t too in depth and they don’t really share the nuances of the process, but more of a how to, you can still learn a ton. The biggest part of the learning process that I’ve found is watching one video at a time and practice/replicate what they’re doing for better understanding and comprehension. I’ve not taken any courses so I cannot recommend a course, but I can recommend these channels. Whenever they post, I watch, listen, learn, practice, and return when I feel I am missing something. Thank you. Yes, I believe you can still color grade even if you use downloaded c-log. You can color grade regardless, whether you're using a standard profile, LOG, or RAW. With color grading and color management you are only pushing and pulling colors as far as the image allows. LOG and RAW allows for much more room to push and pull than the files where contrast and saturation are already baked in. (this is a simplified explanation, but there is much more nuance to it). I am curious as to how well it grades. Would you be willing to send me a few files that you capture from the camera using the downloaded c-log? Which c-log were you able to download onto the camera?
