There are 2 types of cards: (i) edge and (ii) corner/centre. When you're at the edge, moving an even number of times will get you to edge, odd number to corner/centre. When you're at the corner/centre, moving an even number of times will get you to corner/centre, odd number to edge. You start at the edge (1) Move 4 times: edge --> edge You're not at corner so he removes STAFF (2) Move 5 times: edge --> corner/centre You're not at edge so he removes CLUB (3) Move 2 times: corner/centre --> corner/centre You're not at edge so he removes MAIL (4)Move 3 times: corner/centre --> edge (shower or diner) (5)Move 3 times: edge --> corner/centre (bar or engine) (6)Move 1 time: bar or engine --> diner If you don't get diner, it doesn't mean he is wrong. It means you're unable to follow simple instructions.

I was not caught. I started on the engine and on the first round I made a loop and ended up at engine again. The next round i moved left, up, right, right, down and landed on clubs. He then said I was not in the club. I win 😐

You can perform this with 9 playing cards in a 3x3. 1. Start with cards at 2, 4, 6 and 8 only for volunteer to lock in on. 2. Now add the other cards to fill in your 3 by 3. 3. No diagonal moves not skips move 4 places. 4. After removing 9 move 5 places. 5. After removing 6, move 2 more places. 6. Removes 8 and says move 3 places. 7. Removes 3 and 7 and says move 3 places. 8. Removes 2 9. Move once. 10. Removes 1 and 5, you are 4.

So basically, Start off with 4 playing cards at positions 12,3,6 and 9 which creates a diamond shape. 2. Lock volunteer into picking 1 of the 4. 3. Add 5 more cards so that you have 3x3. 4. Instruct rules are no diagonal, just up down and side to side. 5. Move 4 spaces..Back, forth, back forth for example is 4 moves. 6. Magician removes card in 9th position and now has you move 5 spaces. 7. He or she removes card from 6th position and asks you to move 2 spaces 8. Removes card from 8th position and says move 3 spaces. 9. Removes card from 3rd and 7th position and say move 3 spaces. 10. Person is always in the 4th spot.

There is a possibility that u will get to the staff car on your first move. So there will be. A small minority that thinks David is a fraud, oh he is a fraud but a bloody good one !!

If you follow the movement instructions, it is not possible to end on the staff car (or any corner car or engine) on the first move. The four beginning cars are deemed "even" and the five added after are deemed "odd". This means that, starting on one of the even cars, an even number of moves will end you on an even car. An odd number of moves would then end you on an odd car. Following that logic, Copperfield removes cars that you can't be on each turn, and narrows down your movement paths.

The number of moves David gives you determines if you will land on the original 4 cards or the added 5 cards. Even number of moves will keep you in the same set of cards, ie. the four original cards. Odd number of moves will change you between sets of cards, like going from the original four card set to the five card set. This makes it easy to remove cards as it would mathematically impossible to be on those removed cards. In the end, David funnels you to the Diner card.
