What I also find interesting here in Saga's dark version of the Mind Place, is how she constantly feels responsible for Casey. But he's his own person, it was his decision to go to the lake even though he was injured, she couldn't decide for him. Having a psychological trauma makes the whole scene with Saga in the Dark Place so relatable. Things I've gone through during the therapy in a nutshell. Having a dialogue with those parts of yourself and accepting them is hard and painful, but it helps a lot.

I sure know I'd be easy fodder for that dang lake if it was real. I don't trust myself with power in general, purely because I am wary of power and it's way to ensnare and intoxicate the mind. It's a dangerous thing of itself that can really twist values and judgements upside down hard. It's hard for me to see myself ending up in any other way than a madman facilitating the dark presences escape as I clickety clack poke and prod doors, tug at possibilities and play with causality trying to just somehow make it all work weaving the fantastical into being a part of the mundane. Fiction is great for getting to play out thoughts and scenarios in a safe sandbox and to get to go on an adventure with them. Not so much if it becomes woven into reality, overlaps with reality, let alone overtakes reality. Especially if it's a hack job. Any such change would need extreme precision and knowledge on the fundamentals of the mundane. And I would have none of that playing with altered molecules and atoms like letters composing words to reach out at the strings of creation in order to try and play them to my tune with all the finess of a fireplace ornament.

However, people like Odin and Tor Anderson recognized that they weren't interacting with the real Alan Wake, just the projection, a twin, that was taking over the role of Thomas Zane in the rewrite, so they call him "Tom" to let him know that they're in on the story. Ahti also knows that he's dealing with a projection, the same as the film-maker Thomas Zane that you interact with in the Oceanview Hotel, so he calls Alan "Tom". I don’t really joke about references and if I did I would try to make that as obvious as possible. I treat them seriously perhaps too seriously at times. Especially with Persona 5. Sometimes it’s annoying because it can be so strong to the point of distracting or overshadowing from what’s actually happening in the narrative. The most visceral for me The Impossible Astronaut from Doctor Who having a scene very much like the aftermath of Mufasa’s death from The Lion King. I think it was an intentional allusional red herring still gave me metaphorical double vision. Which is odd because I love a nice intentional influential overlap. Though it usually feels more like decoding a hidden code or clue to some hidden treasure so is more exciting than annoying. That’s probably why I was annoyed it was overlapping into what I initially thought was the same picture.

No matter how unhinged this Zane looks, it does feel like he's guiding Alan through the story and actually helping/giving ideas. Sometimes he does it in a similarly cruel way to Alan guiding Saga with the threat to murder her daughter, but well, this is the genre Alan chose (or rather his inner demons made him choose). After I saw Zane with Darling, I was even more convinced. Maybe he isn't even trying to escape, just a trickstery entity that helps others get out or smth by this point
