Van played like an angel. No one had his golden tone, the gossamer arpeggios. I treasure the live concerts I saw him play, a dozen or more in my lifetime. I would drive or fly to hear him in concert. He played "Widmung" as an encore at my request many times when he spotted me first row - and always as his last encore. It was a favorite piece of mine and he loved it too. No one played it prettier. There will never be another like him. He was a musical genius and a beautiful, kind, and thoughtful person. RIP, sweet Van. You earned your wings.

The golden era is gone. Now, it's the students that continue the legacy.

The american Neuhaus came from Russia, the russian Neuhaus came from germany. And the german Neuhaus had been Bruno Seidlhofer and he came from Austria.

@MarianneAlkonost You have it exactly right. The weight of the arm on the keyboard, held up and transferred from fingertip to fingertip, with no wasted motion, is part of what makes beautiful tone - and that is, in part, the result of perfect legato (plus good voicing and pedaling). And speaking of glorious tone and perfect legato, listen to her play the 2nd mvt. of Chopin 1st Concerto. It's on here somewhere.

That is so great that she is singing! The piano of Siloti and Lhevinne is singing itself! They knew the secret...

Amazing it is to see her play. How she holds her hand - it is the clue to the way they taught... How heavy seems her hand - how it rests on the keyboard with its whole weight. Thank you so much for uploading!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for uploading this film! I heard that they supported Alexander Siloti very much in Julliard School! You must have many more treasures from that epoch! Please share!!!
