Nice review. I might be mistaken, but I think in Cormac McCarthy's The Road, the man and the boy come across these mushrooms in a forest!

My impression is, that the Author repeat some facts many many times. Some facts are confusing.

Mushroom seeds? They have spores to propagate and a big chapter in that book is about that as well. How could they have traveled across the ocean.

Thank you for such a clear and easy to understand review of what looks like really engaging 'story for our times'. I likes that you stepped us through the key linkages without oversimplifying the the theoretical frames ( I struggle with capitalist theory and commodity chains) then brought all the threads together at the end with the matsutake as a metaphor for life emerging amidst the ruins. Awesome.

Not sure what the book entails, however one of her lectures, revealed a rather class oriented 'save the world - mantra'. Given that 97% of the world cannot afford such post-atom bomb fungus - these mushrooms which are supposed to the end times miracle savoir . Never mind the current suicide rate in Japan.

No, I have not. I have read some Pynchon but sometimes struggle with his works. I find Vollmann more enjoyable. Would you recommend M&D?

@@jaredh6451 I would if you like Maximalist Novels. Check out Leaf by Leaf's review of it kzbin.info/www/bejne/epm9oH5pZ76BiNU&ab_channel=LeafbyLeaf as he does a good job of capturing it and maybe that would stir you one way or the other?

I would say Mason & Dixon is a very good novel to start with rather than Gravity’s Rainbow. It is difficult, as Pynchon almost always is, but it is somewhat more accessible, perhaps due to the subject or, ironically, the use of the language of the time.
