Yes, they shed, but on the plus side their fur is like teflon,- dirt and mud roll off them without the need for a bath.

A GSD is an excellent choice for a first time owner, as long as the owners have the time to train and to spend time with them. If the dog will be home alone everyday while an owner is at work, a GSD is Not a good choice.
