Meade Helios The suri ashi and foot work is entirely necessary. It’s a form of balance and any wrong/flat step will leave you susceptible to being thrown on the ground and obliterated. It might look silly but try it yourself, to get to this level it can take years of discipline every single day, and is still a lifelong journey.

I find there screaming to actually be a disadvantage, it get them pump and also uses up there strength. Swordsmanship is not just a body of steel but a mind of steel, becoming excited create a unstable mind set and thus u weaken yourself to a cold calculated attack.

I think it also depends upon how strict shimpan are. Where I live now (not where I learnt kendo) they basically award anything that goes vaguely near the target area, and don't pay any attention to ki ken tai no ichi. Posture, hasuji (blade angle), zanshin, etc. are not important. There's no notion of cutting with a sword. It's a stick you hit with. So, of course many people do ridiculous things. Yet they are rewarded for them. It's kind of hard to argue with people when they're "winning".

There are tons of Japanese guys under thirty who have sport kendo, but by their late thirties especially, they almost all have beautiful kendo. There could be several explanations. I think it's just that sport kendo doesn't work in the long run. I'm not that far off forty myself and the modicum of form that I have is all that stops me from completely sucking against my juniors. My body is not what it once was. Those guys in their 30s, 40s, etc. are also often really good at shiai too.

The girl who is red? No, her footwork is terrible! Watch the slow motion replay of her men cut. Total sport kendo. First look at how high she lifts her right foot! Then, the ki ken tai no ichi is way off. The cut and the fumikomi ashi are completely out of sync. Then, the follow through is just awful. She crosses her feet and basically runs through the cut. She can get away with this now because she's young and super fast. Age takes that away though and leaves only one's real kendo.

As a kid, practicing kendo in a cold winter day morning was something I most hated. Stepping in on the freezing cold floor was just like torturing your foot.

In martial arts, (well in anything really), breath control is key. the Kiai helps release energy in your strike. when you kiai, you're also using your abdominals, adding to the acceleration of moving forward. also, there is less pressure against the folding of your body when moving forward because there is less air in your lungs. finally, there is the psychological aspect from the kiai. that's vaguely the science of it.
@kensin1976
@kensin1976 11 жыл бұрын
it's because of the timing, you kiai, hit and stomp/step of the foot must be one. So your strike is most efficient, you attack without holding back.

Wrong - atleast partially. Kiai, the shout, is to empower your strike by releasing your spirit. To shout the part where you are striking is merely something used for practice and a habbit of certain dojo's. You often hear more veteran kendo practicioneers shouting whatever it is they feel like.

I'm no Kendo professional, but Google goes a long way. They shout because the rules say you must shout where your strike is aimed at. It should also affect your performance through controlled breathing. If you're going to exhale strongly during the strike, you might as well shout while you're at it.
