I'm using this adventure to playtest a 30s pulp adventure rpg, and I'm adding onto the fake haunted house theme and had them see a film projection of a man in a sheet costume walk through a wall. They have not checked to find the film projector

I will say, having the full out battle is still doable for greenest, just make the cultists really behind the scenes. Maybe the party catches a glimpse of the lady in the purple robes bringing rise to suspicion about the motives behind the attack. Parties I've run this for have enjoyed running right into the fray and having a sense of urgency and confusion, forcing them to use good tactics and be patient

Bridgerton soundtracks for epic masquerade scenes! Make the songs match the specific part of the masquerade. Edgy songs for hostile fellow guests and fancy songs for when the king is present etc. plus killbill soundtracks for when the fighting breaks out.

2024 and there are still people learning from your ideas (me)! Thanks a lot mate! I'm trying to expand on the ideas specially about the town. In my table, the people from Oakhurst know the fruit is evil, they have been getting their supply for a while now, enough time for some curious mind to suspect something, and eventually investigate the magic behind the fruit. As Gulthias was a vampire, it's not far fetched to find necromantic magic inside the fruits after a good analysis. The people from Oakhurst, however, chose not to stop selling as it has become the biggest attraction for the town, bringing some tourism and interested investors, after all how many backwards villages have wonder fruits? The economy, before primarily plant based, has now grown due to the fruits, and the townfolk is hard to go back to the old ways. So, for my players, there are basically 2 ways to finish the quest: - they destroy the tree, its fruits are now gone as it will be their offspring in a day or so. However you have just awakened a dark force (Gulthias) and the people from Oakhurst hate your guts, even threatening to complain to the elite of Neverwinter (you can use it as a hook); - they do not destroy the tree. The villagers thank them and show their true colors (i'm not gonna tell my players the villagers know anything, they are gonna play dumb). They say they are going to start a bigger exploration project of the tree and the citadel because, now that the druid is gone, the only obstacle are simply a few goblins and kobolds, nothing that the elite from Neverwinter wouldn't be able to pay their way through.

Our DM has fused this with a few different modules and some homebrew. We have had loads of fun with it. He picked modules that fit into our backstories. Mine is related to the shadowfell and necromancy this being a perfect launch point.

Our group only got to level 9 by the end. Our DM used xp for leveling and pushed us to be very careful and creative. I’d definitely recommend that kind of level progression to others.

I’m starting this campaign in a couple of weeks and I was really overwhelmed by the opening. After watching your video I’ve decided to bring them there with a funeral. Their friend has died in a fire in their home under mysterious circumstances. They “hopefully” find lower rank cult robes in the rubble. Now they have to figure out if their friend helped the cult or was infiltrating it. It also adds a layer of mistrust from the council.

Commenting on th 4 year old video, still quite useful: my players may find things along the way like patches of specific herbs or outcrops of a type of rock that are either part of a side quest or provide a clue to the main adventure.

This was a pretty interesting video, with good advice, but why is your thumbnail headshots of two GMs who really don't (at least in their public games) run mega dungeons? 😂 Hope to see more like this in the future.

You gotta drop Mercer or Mulligan in a DnD thumbnail if you want traction

I like the idea of not treating it as a war. But at the same time, if the council is trying to end the cult, then sending the players alone feels not real. One idea just occurred to me. The council could have recruited additional groups to track cult activities on different regions and given them a way to send word back to the council of any important findings, so that they can in turn direct the other parties. This way the players could receive information of other parties having found and killed some leaders, other parties having being killed etc. Then, perhaps on the final battle, if the players send word of the ritual having started the council could have one other remaining party teleported to aid them. What do you think?

I look something up in the book and then I make a short list. -What would he have precast on himself to prepare? -What will he cast in the first round? probably his strongest crowd control -What will he do to remove remaining targets? probably his strongest nuke. -What will he do to get away if it goes badly? Probably some sort of teleport or illusion. And that's it. Remember that it's pretty rare for the BBEG to actually last more than 4 or 5 rounds against a competent party, so you only have to know what actions he's going to take in that time.

this completely unbalances the game.. there are so many more ways to reduce combat. and the 5 seconds it takes to roll the dice and ad your modifier to it is nothing compared to all the other ways to reduce combat. like,.. payign attention to otehr peoples turns, having the monsters Ac known so they dont have to ask does it hit every time, or not argueing over little things that dont matter.
@NerdKingdom201810 ай бұрын
Those things do speed up combat. But this rule change actually comes from a product called "nimble" (I have no association) which I recommend checking out. Massively sped up gameplay

Surely, this means a rogue would go mental with sneak attack damage as 1 in 4 dagger hits being crits, and it takes some focus away from two-handed weapons for more reliable crits. If this works with spells, how would that work with a firebolt that does 2d10 from level 5 or just any weapon with multiple die, like 2d6? Just curious on these thoughts as I've never seen this idea before and I'm interested to see your thoughts on this
@NerdKingdom201810 ай бұрын
Weapons like daggers would hit and miss more regularly. Whereas two-handed weapons would hit more reliably.

Great and awesome video; maybe could have used more maps and sound back in the day...myself never needed much prep-work to let them explore, almost always did improvisation on the spot. Not every DM or GM does this well, I found the instant genius creativity on the fly, can make a huge difference in players enjoyment and thus the difference in perception on how good a DM/GM is.
