I’m just under 6’4” and just ended up avoiding single wall tents altogether. The X-Dome 1+ is still kinda tight lengthwise for us tall guys, but I personally don’t mind if my feet touch a little bit in a double wall tent and the headroom is very nice! I love it! I really wish tent manufacturers would add just a couple more inches in length or make tall versions because I would love it even more if I didn’t have to lay diagonally.

I bought a Dipole 2 DW recently, brand new direct from Tarptent. Arrived with bad stitching at the Velcro on the door vents, with the Velcro hanging off, 80% unstitched along the edges. Tarptent wouldn’t agree to refund my shipping costs for sending it back. Super bad customer service. No fault of mine. They just didn’t want to take responsibility for not bothering to check their products before they send them. And a really petulant and dismissive manner of speaking via email. Nice products but terrible attitude. I’d read about Henry’s moody strops but didn’t expect to have to deal with one myself 🍼👶

Thanks for the kind words. As I mentioned just now on your other video, the pitch looks lower than typical on that rocky site, where a higher pitch (via longer corner cords) could increase the clearance/headroom on the corners by 3-5" to make it more comfortable, but yes 6'5" is pushing the upper limit of the tent. Thanks for putting this together and using our gear. - Dan
@MostlyTenkara21 күн бұрын
Thanks Dan! Yeah, we had high winds so I needed to pitch as low as possible, and even with that, dusk was blowing into the tent all night. Just want to say again, I love all your stuff! It's so hard finding gear that's big enough for me--I have high hopes for the X-Dome 2!
@durstongear22 күн бұрын
Nice job putting this together. FWIW, at 6:05 it looks like you have the X-Mid Pro 2+ pitched as low as possible to the ground (e.g the fly edge is almost touching the ground). That is good in high winds to minimize drafts, but a higher pitch would increase the headroom and available length inside. The height of the pitch will vary depending on how long the cords at the corners (because the corner cords act like an extension of the fly) but usually there is a gap of about 4" around the bottom edge of the tent and there can be up to about 6" (whereas the pitch here looks like about 1"). If you did pitch it at more typical (4") or tall (6") edge gap, then the height at the corners would be improved by 3-5" which would make more viable to sleep on the longer diagonal. With a higher pitch we do have quite a few happy users around 6'6" but certainly the Dipole is a larger tent yet.
@MostlyTenkara21 күн бұрын
Thanks Dan, for putting this explanation here for others to see--and yes, if it had not been for the high winds, I would have pitched the tent higher up to allow for more interior space. I pitched it low and tight, and I still had sand and dust blowing through the tent all night. In fair weather, I do think I would juuuust fit comfortably, without wind compressing the walls and a higher pitch. Thanks for posting here, and thanks for designing and making incredible gear! I'll be interested to see how the X-Dome 2 is for tall people!

This is so helpful bc I have been agonizing over the Dipole 2DW or the Double Rainbow DW. I want a tent mostly for me but also able for me and my daughter or my husband if I am ever able to get them to come w me. I only want the silpoly bc I would only be going out a few times a year and don’t think that it’s worth the extra expense to get dyneema in either. My issue is solely a form factor. Easier pitch w rainbow or more functional space w dipole. You are the only tall person that gives good advice about both these tents. I am 6’ and hubby is 6-3. Thx for feedback.
@MostlyTenkara22 күн бұрын
@@anninwhack1998 Great! So glad you found this informative. Here are some additional thoughts, having owned the Double Rainbow. I sold it because it was simply impossible for two people to be sitting up in the tent at the same time. Also, I don’t think the rainbow pitch is any easier than the dipole. The one advantage the Rainbow does have is that it’s quasi freestanding, so you don’t need as secure stake points to really get a secure pitch, especially in the wind. The dipole seems to have a lot of tension on the stakes, which is why they include longer 8” ones. So if there’s high winds, you may have to spend an extra amount of time to create a secure pitch. But the interior livable space and that window are just incredible on the Dipole, and I would choose the dipole over the double rainbow any day of the week.

Oh boy... I have many many sun hoodies and many many opinions on em! I guess I should do a video on sun hoodies. My wife hates it, makes fun of me relentlessly for how many I have. This one is an older one from Patagonia (I had the pro deal for a few years so amassed a lot of their gear). Essential sun hoody features for me: button on the hood, thumb holes, and ideally a zippered chest pocket (but few have this last one). My latest sun hoody acquisition is this one: lakesriversstreams.com/collections/hoodies/products/mountain-stream-upf-hoodie, because I love the print design. However, I removed the big pocket, took it to the tailor and had them add a button and thumb holes. Now it's perfect. The other one I'll mention, if you're in a hot climate and want something that is insanely breathable and light, but still is rated to UPF 50 protection, this one is killer: www.mountainhardwear.com/p/mens-crater-lake-hoody-1982411.html. my two pesos...... (I generally fish Rocky Mountain alpine streams/rivers....wild trout anywhere from 6"-16", sometimes larger) My Tanuki Pocket Ninja is by far one of my favourite rods. An absolute joy to cast, and handles 12"-16" fish just fine when I find them on the line. In terms of quality, feel, and performance it's dang near perfect. Now, I did make a custom cork handle for it (I used to build fly rods and have this ability), and this does make a difference. Also, while I love Tanuki (my "other" main rod is a 375), I really don't like their super bright graphics and paintjobs....luckily they also offer more basic "plain" options. I do have, and use, a Dragontail Talon Mini 310. And I like it fine enough. But it doesn't cast/feel anywhere near as nice as the Tanuki. What makes is very worthwhile to have is that it's inexpensive, relatively easy to get "locally" hear in the states, has great support from Dragontail, is compact and robust enough to always have with you, and fishes just fine. Basically, I have it in my pack at all times as a back up, and when I do fish with it I have a fine time catching nice fish. Definitely worth having. My other "pocket rod" is surprising. I've fished for years with it.....before being able to afford the Tanuki, and before the Talon Mini was available. And.....again surprisingly....it's actually a pretty nice rod - feels fine, fishes well, is very compact, and relatively robust (though I have broken, and replaced, a tip). So why surprising? - because it's an Aventik Pocket rod, which only costs $54 on Amazon (that includes a spare tip section). Now, Aventik is odd.....most of their offerings range from "acceptable" to pretty bad, and their models seem to come in and out of existence, making it hard to actually know what you are getting. I wouldn't recommend most anything else they make. But this one is absolutely worth it, and way better than you might expect. The one to look for is "Aventik Z Pocket", "Super Compact IM12 Nano", is a kinda brown/bronze color with either a dark red handle section or a EVA handle, and is 11.42" long. Mine is the 9 foot version with the EVA handle.

Even for someone not quite your height, the lack of vertical space at the foot and head is a problem with many trekking pole tents that maximize vertical space in the center. I think they prioritize livability (sitting up) over sleeping. Have you considered an A-frame style tent? Something like a Tarptent Protrail Li? Because the high points (poles) are at the long ends rather than the center, they're much better for vertical head and foot clearance. They do sacrifice livability though-- great for sleep but not so much for hanging out. I have a Yama Cirriform (discontinued DCF version) with those attributes. Works great for solo sleep.

Why did you place it on the lid instead of the side of the pot at the level of where the water/contents actually are?
@MostlyTenkaraАй бұрын
@@southernfriedheathen994 hi there! A couple reasons: 1) the sides of the pot get very hot because the flame travels up the side. So if the sticker was on the side of the pot, there’s a good chance it would burn or melt, 2) if the sticker is on the lid, you can see it from any angle, and 3) the steam that is given off by the water as it approaches boil is hot enough to heat the lid enough to make the sticker change color. In this application, the accuracy of the temperature indicator is less important than the simple notification that your water is almost boiling. Usually when the sticker is about half way colored, it means it’s time to remove the lid so your water doesn’t boil over. I hope that helps!
