I don’t understand how so many people have so much $$$ to become mountaineers honestly that baffles me most
@StormsandSaugeye3 күн бұрын
Mountaineering is rather affordable. But to climb Everest does require specialized equipment. If you're just doing some standard climbs, the gear tends to be less than 1500 total. More if you choose certain brands. If you're doing non technical climbs such as most new Mexico mountains, you might need some grampons for ice but hiking poles, a backpack, etc all tend to be affordable especially if you spread your purchases out. But if you *REALLY* wanna get cheap, and you're going up mountains with well marked trails, and it's a day hike, you can get away with walking poles, a good pair of shoes, a backpack, plenty of water, your cell phone, and a map.

While I can absolutely see the English embellishing the execution or making up the method all together, if they did it with the idea of making the Natives seem “uncivilized” I am going to have to raise a very pointed eyebrow at the entire drawing and quartering business. Pot and kettle guys.

Snow blindness is very literally a sunburn ON YOUR CORNEA. Bad times. Also, skiing goggles help with contrast on the topography, especially when it is cloudy, so you don’t get taken by surprise by bumps in the terrain. (Not to mention eliminating the wind in your eyes which is ALSO miserable. Especially if there are flurries.) Edit: as a Canadian who has had pretty severe hypothermia once and less severe hypothermia more than a few times, even if your brain is still working properly, your limbs aren’t. Coordination stops working all together after a point and simple tasks like closing your hand around an object are almost impossible. And it takes HOURS to warm all the way up, even in a fully heated modern building.

It’s vile that McVay was blamed and only exonerated after his death. But Hasley wasn’t blamed for ordering the third fleet into the center of Typhoon Cobra and directly causing the sinkings of numerous ships and hundreds of men.

one of the things that likely saved them was the fact that the raft was slightly sunken under the waves due to its weight. the ancient polynesians used to flood their double hulled canoes if they encountered heavy weather to keep the waves from smashing the canoes to bits. not denying it was a ghastly affair but if the raft had been floating on top of the waves they very likely would have all died. i would not want to be the one woman on board. if i recall she was r*ped which adds a whole other horrific element to this nightmare. it really goes to show how leadership can be the difference between the majority of people living or dying. like the wrecks of the invercauld and the grafton.

I have sailed to Fiji as a merchant marine sailor and visited the natural history museum in Suva. I love Fiji and their people. I hope to go back some day. I hate hearing these stories from someone incapable of this reality or understanding. When do we get a poem titled. "The custom of space travel". This is why we have fishing gear in the life boats which will not be an option in space. Oh well, we all die someday. The trial really should have been based on the unseaworthy vessel and how that placed them in this dire situation of survival. We still have that legal brain-fart today when we don't hold CEOs accountable.

Amazing, the things wealthy people need to do, just to feel alive, then to die miserably in the process. There is a element of narcissism and self loathing in this sport. The Sherpas are just there to make a living and feed their families.

Could something be done to remove the bodies and trash using high altitude balloons? Using remote control to control the descent using vales to release gas from the Ballon and some kind of navigation, maybe drone tech just to navigate and the ballons to take the weight? I don't know just an idea I had
@StormsandSaugeye3 күн бұрын
This last year, they started using drones to do waste removal with a fair amount of success. Further, a number of companies with good reputations do pack in pack out policies and won't leave the mountain until all their waste is removed. It's the less reputable ones that are the worst.

$5.8 million is not that much. Nepal should increase the price to $50000-$75000. This way there’d be lesser inexperienced people and Nepal could climb and they’d make more money. Also, there should be some hotel and a means of transportation for people who just want to visit the area. Like I wanna go see Everest, I don’t wanna climb it. Also, climbers should be mandated to go the bathroom there an throw their waste there for a certain daily mandatory price. This “resort and spa” would be very famous. Unfortunately environmentalists who’re complaining about trash on the mountain would now complain of the environmental impact of having a hotel there.

I saw a photo of a deceased woman, probably at Rainbow Valley, which sort of haunts me. She was a beautiful woman, but it was so sad obviously. She just looked like she was contemplating something, but her eyes had the vacant look that only a dead person can possess. Another climber stopped to see her and the look on his face had the same I felt. It was sad, but I hope someday, she will return to her family for her final resting place. Did anyone else see her photo?

This is the best fairytale crap I've ever heard , for starter in 1586 Sir Walter Raleigh brought tobacco to England from Virginia, so for the next 20years tobacco was being shipped to England from Virginia. As for the Cannibalism, which I can see you're skirting around not wanting to admit happened, in the winter of 1609 when the ship left for England there was 500 settlers, due to bad weather the ship did not return with supplies until spring of 1610, only to discovery that there was only 46 settlers found alive because they had eaten the other 454 to survive the starvation of the 1609.
