the vocals are medieval choral style vocal arrangement. Very apt to sync with the story and the time period per se they are supposed to be in: 800's. The theme on the text (lyrics) is consistent with very specific and distinct German music composition themes of the country side, unrequited love longing politics though the 18th century and early 1900's. Sawano really REALLY researched this. The singer however has since then taken corrections to her diction in German and sounds MUCH better live than in this recording. She still has some improvement to go for her diction but it is levels better than this now.

About the "flashback" of Eren and Mikasa in the cabin, think of it as Eren reaching out to her via paths at the very moment, since Ackermans cannot have their memories erased Time not existing in the Paths, they may have spent their 4 years there, hence why Mikasa did not cry at all, she could've make her peace in their paths life ? The fact that she responds "I'm sorry, I can't" on Falco's back, tying her scarf around her, right after Eren tells her to forget about him seems like they just had the conversation. She also knew he was in the mouth, which suggests her told her himself off camera ? Basically Eren did/had to bring her there at the very last moment, to show her that yes, he would've ran with her, and to give her the final push, and at the same time show her that he would've ran with her if she wanted to (implying that he loved her). Very "Japan-esque" way of showing romance if you ask me lol
